The Fitness Blog Week in Review June 2 – June 8

Is it Saturday already? This has been a crazy week and our plans were sidetracked hard because the daughter was sick all week. She suffered from a high fever for five days and now she has a full-fledged head cold. Hopefully next week will see us back out on our bikes and swimming again. In the meanwhile, here is our week in review: Saturday, June 2 Does Becoming a Parent Means Becoming Sedentary? Studies suggest that with the shifting priorities and lack of sleep after a baby is born, parents are less likely to exercise than they were before they … Continue reading

Toddler Bikes & Bike Safety

Good morning and welcome to September 12, here in the baby blog. It’s a balmy 68 degrees this morning with the relative humidity stuck somewhere around the icky and the sticky. Today I want to talk about toddler bikes and bike safety. Many parents assume that they don’t have to worry about bike safety until their little one grows up enough to graduate to a two wheeler, but bike safety begins as soon as your child starts mastering a trike or a bike outside. Our daughter was between 2 and 3 when she received her first tricycle. She rode it … Continue reading

Your Baby & Head Trauma

Head trauma is terrifying no matter how old your baby is and there are many opportunities for your baby to receive such head injury, so the more prepared you are – the more proactive you can be to help reduce the opportunities for a head trauma to occur. For example, when my daughter was just 10 weeks old, she rolled off a bed. I didn’t think she could squirm that far and she was right in the center of a queen sized bed and I’d stepped into the restroom. I wasn’t gone two minutes. When I came back, she was … Continue reading

The Duggar’s Early Delivery

I watched Special Duggar Delivery tonight on TLC and I found myself tearing up on numerous occasions. Watching Jim Bob tearfully determine to continue to praise God during such a difficult time, Michelle looking so ill in her hospital bed, baby Josie’s little kicks in the incubator, and Josh’s reaction to hearing the news about the birth, filled my heart with grief over all the fear and trials they must have experienced. It must be so traumatic to look upon your child, who still should have had four months in your safe womb, struggling to breathe and fighting for life. … Continue reading

Surprise Babies

This month I’m going to share with you a few very special stories about surprise babies. There are no such things as “accidents” when it comes to babies, only unexpected blessings. Sometimes we have a hard time accepting the timing of these little bundles, but children have a way of stealing our hearts despite the circumstances. Sometimes the timing is nothing short of miraculous! I look forward to telling you the story of Heather and her precious little girl, Lily. Heather overcame countless obstacles in her TTC journey and her pregnancy was nothing short of a miracle. I will be … Continue reading

My Experience With Natural Childbirth, Part 3

“What was it really like?” That was the question I was asking all my girlfriends who’d gone before me. I learned that woman have such a wide variety of experiences, even between their own children. No labor and delivery is quite the same as the next. Each one is unique. Some women made me a little nervous with their stories of 48 hour labors and 4th degree tearing. Fortunately, my story is not so traumatic. That is why I’m sharing my childbirth story: if one woman can take a breath and relax after reading this, I’ve done my job. I’m … Continue reading

Falls and Brain Injury

Breaking a hip isn’t the only thing to fear when an older adult has an unintentional fall. Brain injury can cause long-term problems, affect how a person functions, and even impact emotional well-being! Some unpleasant statistics from a U.S. Centers for Disease Control study: Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) from a fall resulted in nearly 8,000 deaths in seniors and more than 50,000 hospitalizations in 2005. The death and hospitalization rates for TBI increase as age increases. The average hospital stay for an older adult with a fall-related TBI is four days. The average cost of a hospital stay for an … Continue reading

Book Review: We Wanted You

We Wanted You, by Liz Rosenberg, is a wonderful addition to a child’s library, especially the library of a child who came to his or her family through adoption. The book is simple enough to be understood by a three-year-old, yet the beautiful illustrations by Peter Catalanotto will appeal to younger and older readers, and the message of love will be reassuring to adoptees of any age. The words and pictures interact uniquely to tell the story of Enrique. The pictures begin with the present and go back to the past, while the words tell the adoptive parents’ story from … Continue reading

Let’s Talk About Dealing with Grief from Birth Loss

Having something other than your ideal birth can be a painful experience, especially if you truly desired to deliver naturally. Often, women who end up with an emergency c-section feel a sense of guilt, loss, and even failure. Or perhaps it wasn’t a cesarean that you or someone you know is grieving over, but an intervention that you desired to avoid. Sometimes opting for pain-relieving drugs can make a woman feel like she had less of a birth experience than she desired to. My first delivery went very well, and was a successful homebirth. I was very proud of myself, … Continue reading

Santa Claus is Coming To Town

It’s a big day for you and your baby when you head to the mall for that first photograph with Santa Claus. Depending on the age of your baby, this can be a tremendously fun experience or it can be traumatic. Our kids love the idea of a jolly old man with his twinkling eyes and gentle manner. But not every mall Santa falls into this category and not every baby sees a genial old man who is going to provide a fun photograph for mom and dad’s scrapbooks. Santa is a Stranger Every baby goes through phases of stranger … Continue reading
