Valorie’s Breastfeeding Index

Later today I will post a review of the baby blog of 2007 so why does breastfeeding get its own category? Well, in part as an answer to readers who want to read what I’ve written on breastfeeding. I’ve written so much on breastfeeding at this point that you all have asked for an index of sorts so it’s easier to find what you’re looking for. It’s also in part because I’ve become known as the breastfeeding lady. . .guru. . .whatever you want to call it. I’ve been at this breastfeeding business for a long time and many of … Continue reading

Comfrey

Comfrey has long been used as a healing herb — the Greeks used the herb to stop bleeding, knit bones, and treat breathing problems as far back as 400 BC. In more recent years, there has been some concern about the safety of comfrey. Greek and Roman physicians believed that comfrey roots had the ability to stick things together, whether food in a cooking pot or bones in the body. Poultices made with comfrey were applied to external wounds; comfrey tea was used for stomach problems, digestive issues, bleeding, and more. Breastfeeding Reaches the Poor and Huddled Masses

So my title is a little bit melodramatic but I am happy to say that the New York City Department of Health and other various agencies in NYC (including the ones that administrates publicly funded hospitals and WIC) are actively promoting breastfeeding. In honor of World Breastfeeding week, New York City is abuzz with activity. It all started yesterday when I was reading about a nurse-in that was going to take place on the New York City subway system. I had written previously how I wouldn’t participate in a nurse in because I think they are a largely ineffective way … Continue reading

Initiating Breastfeeding with the Breast Crawl

Did you know that if you place a newborn on his mother’s abdomen after birth, he is capable of finding her breast all on his own and initiating breastfeeding by himself? This act is known as the breast crawl and it is being heavily promoted during World Breastfeeding Week. All Babies Do This This phenomenon was first published in an organized study in 1998. Infants were dried off and then immediately placed on their mother’s abdomen with the baby’s head on mom’s chest. Every single infant was able to instinctively find his mother’s nipple and begin suckling. In subsequent studies, … Continue reading

There are all sorts of events internationally and if you are interested in participating or getting information you can visit the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action. All of this week, I will be featuring breastfeeding articles in the baby blog. If you have questions about breastfeeding … Continue reading
