What to Expect If Your Baby is Jaundiced

If your baby is diagnosed with jaundice, the news can be scary for you. Jaundice can range from mild to severe. If left untreated, mild cases may resolve themselves. Severe cases could lead to brain damage or even death. Fortunately, for babies, jaundice is very common, and doctors and hospitals are well aware of the signs and the treatment. All three of my children were diagnosed with jaundice. Each had a different degree of jaundice and therefore different treatment or combination of treatments. Here is what to expect if your baby is diagnosed with jaundice. Pricks and blood tests Depending … Continue reading

My “Get Back on Track” Soup

Losing weight is never easy. With Halloween having just passed, and Thanksgiving just around the corner, you may have already been inundated with far too many sweets and comfort foods. Instead of “dieting” during the holidays, why not make up a delicious batch of soup? It fills the comfort-food need in you and gives you the fiber and vitamins you need to get healthy. The best thing about this recipe is that it’s just a starter. I used the ingredients I had in my own kitchen to make this soup. If you have other ingredients in this soup, they will … Continue reading

Baby on Board – Why?

Have you ever looked at the baby on board signs and wondered about them? I know that at several points in my life, I have – all of these were before I became a parent myself. But let’s take a step back for a moment and look back on those days before I was a parent – when the ‘on board’ sign became the noveau thing to do – everyone was getting in on the act. From the baby on board to the mommy to be on board to the dog on board – the signs didn’t quit. I used … Continue reading

Is Daycare Good For My Baby?

This question is one that many working mothers must ask themselves. Yet current research shows that daycare for infants and toddlers is not as good as being with a parent or other relative. Author of Motherhood: How should we care for our children?, Anne Manne, talks about the dilemma that many women face. If she gives up her job to have a child, “she incurs an opportunity cost — her forfeited income and possible career advancement.” If she places her child in daycare and returns to work then “it’s the baby, according to a growing body of research, who incurs … Continue reading

Baby Einstein’s Best Books

Those of you who have read my previous blogs know that I am a big fan of The Baby Einstein Company and its products. Well, I usually blab on and on about all of the wonderful videos. Here you will find a small change of pace. Of course there are many books from The Baby Einstein Company, but there are three books that my daughter has which she absolutely adores: “What Does Violet See? Raindrops and Puddles,” “Windows to Color,” and “Mirror Me! A Mirror Book.” All three books were written by Julie Aigner-Clark, the founder of The Baby Einstein … Continue reading

Creating Your Baby’s Haven

It seems like it was just yesterday that I was pregnant and trying to decide on a nursery theme. But the reality is, I just got done giving my now two-year-old daughter’s room a major makeover. As I described in previous articles, the decorations and furniture in her room are now more age-appropriate. Of course, I couldn’t help but sigh as I pulled down the Baby Snoopy wall hangings. Yes, I chose to decorate her nursery with a mass-market theme (Baby Snoopy EVERYTHING from lamps to rugs). However, if you are looking to steer away from the commercially popular nursery … Continue reading

Ten Months Old Part II

In my daughter’s short ten months she has become accustomed to her brother’s antics. For the most part she gets along really well with her brother and loves to watch him dance and play guitar (she actually finds it hilarious and goes into giggling fits). She has also developed her own love of music and she even has her own dance moves to songs that she recognizes and likes. While she genuinely enjoys all different kinds of music, she is a particular fan of playing children’s songs on the guitar with her daddy. Her favorite song is called “Yellow Bus.” … Continue reading

Pets Have Allergies Too

It’s that time of year: my car, porch, deck, and even some of my plants, are covered in a yellow dust. Pollen season is upon us, and for many unfortunates that means it’s time to suffer through allergies. As is true with many things, humans aren’t the only ones that might be affected by the dreaded plant powder. All this past week my dog has come in with her snout, muzzle, and sometimes even her eyes, covered in pollen. She didn’t seem any different than normal, however, which leads me to believe that despite her many itching problems pollen is … Continue reading

Ew – Bedbugs

Good night, sleep tight, don’t let the bedbugs bite. I remember hearing this growing up and the thought of bed bugs seemed as old as my grandparents. But, if you’ve been listening to the news, you know that bedbugs are back. There has been an outbreak of bedbugs in our country, but don’t panic. First of all, bedbugs won’t make you sick, they don’t transmit diseases, and if you have them, it doesn’t mean your home is dirty. They may or may not bit you, but basically are just annoying. With that being said, why an outbreak now? Officials think … Continue reading
