When To Start Solids-Part II

A couple of days ago, I discussed a little about starting solids with my babies. You can find that article here. When you have issues with food allergies like my children have had, it is important to stick with introducing one food at a time. This will help you determine if there are any issues with the foods you are introducing. Otherwise, with infant led feeding, the idea is that you go slow, and let your child eat what you are eating so that they slowly learn what real food is all about. In our family, we have decided to … Continue reading

How to Know When You Should Have Another Baby

Once you have a child, it can be so hard to know if you should have another one. You are often afraid you won’t love the second as much as the first. But, then you have number two, and realize that your love is not divided. It just grows. But, when you are ready to have number 3, maybe the more likely question is, “Can I handle it?” Three seems like a crowd. Seriously. I have two kids. A boy and a girl. In some ways, it takes the pressure off of having a third. I got one of each, … Continue reading

The Sippy Cup Disaster

This is a story I like to call “The Sippy Cup Disaster.” It all started with a string of sippy cup disappearances. Over time, the replacements got cheaper and cheaper because I got so tired of dropping loads of cash on buying new sippy cups every week. I don’t know where they go. Some of them, I’m sure disappear into a black hole that exists underneath the seats in our mini van. Some of them are chewed up and it’s no mystery what has caused their fate (my son’s sharp teeth, of course.) Some of them are just plain gone … Continue reading

The Well Stocked Diaper Bag

A well stocked diaper bag can make everyone happy. Never underestimate the power of a well packed diaper bag. It can prevent meltdowns, embarrassment, and stress. All too often we think of diaper bags and automatically limit their use to diapers (or bottles, depending on the baby’s age), but a diaper bag can be so much more. It should be an emergency kit for both mom and baby. Here is a sample list of things you might want to add to your diaper bag. To conserve space, use travel size containers. Snacks for mom & baby. The key phrase here … Continue reading

The Water Boy

A while ago our son started drinking a lot of water. Some of this must have been in relation to his waning desire to nurse all of the time and his increasing desire to eat solid foods. When he first started drinking water he had a very small sipping cup and this served his needs for a while. He wouldn’t really drink the whole thing while eating (as he’d soon after nurse) and he’d eventually drink the whole thing but he wasn’t really seeking it out for a long while. The watercup would sit, lonely, on the bookshelf or somewhere … Continue reading

Sippy Cups

I have bought so many different kinds of sippy cups over the past several months, I’m beginning to consider myself a sippy connoisseur. I tried the traditional cup with handles on the lid. I tried a few with handles on the cup itself. I have tried straw cups with and without sliding covers for travel. Some of our sippy cups feature valves and some do not. Some of them I would consider to be a little pricey and some of them are made to toss. Interestingly enough, it’s the cheap valve-free, take-and-toss cups that I have come to appreciate the … Continue reading

A Safe Drink: Chemicals in Baby Bottles and Cups

Water is good for you. But when water, formula, milk or juice is stored in a container that leaches chemicals, the nourishing drink that you’ve prepared for your baby turns into something more – a chemical soup that you don’t want anyone to drink, let alone your child. Recently, there has been a lot of concern over a specific chemical, BPA. What are the concerns with chemicals in baby bottles and cups? As plastics are heated in the microwave or the dishwasher, they can release chemicals like Bisphenol A (BPA). This particular chemical mimics the female hormone estrogen, and too … Continue reading

Long Island, NY Getting Ready to Ban BPA

A county in Long Island, New York may just be the first to ban baby bottles and sippy cups that contain the chemical Bisphenol-A (BPA). BPA has been shown in many studies to have adverse affects on the developmental growth of babies. BPA can leak from sippy cups and baby bottles into food and drink. Suffolk County legislature approved the ban unanimously, now it is up to Steve Levy, the County Executive to sign it into law. This would make Suffolk County the very first in the nation to actually ban BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups. Other state … Continue reading

Isn’t it crazy the way babies grow so quickly? It seems that you just get used to one stage and boom they are already into another.
