Ask a Baby Blogger: Can I Still Be Vegan and Breastfeed?

Question: I’ve read some stories about vegan parents who malnourished their baby while breastfeeding. Should I not breastfeed so that my baby can be healthy? And if I shouldn’t breastfeed, what else should I feed my baby? Cow’s milk? Soy milk? Thanks for your response. Whoa Nelly! Before I answer this let me just say that I’m not a vegan. . .not even a vegetarian. However, I do know that breast milk is always the best food for an infant. It does not violate the ideals of veganism as I understand it, because first of all your milk was intended … Continue reading

Is Your Baby’s Bottle Safe?

It has long been agreed upon by scientists that breastfeeding is the way to go when it comes to feeding your baby. Breastfeeding has been linked statistically to numerous health benefits including making your baby smarter, being developmentally advanced, reduced allergies, reduced risk of cancer and just about everything else under the sun that could be healthy and good for your baby. While formula cannot come close to mimicking breast milk perhaps another variable in the “breast is better” statistics is that hard plastic bottles have now been found to leak a dangerous chemical into the bottle’s liquid. An independent … Continue reading

What You Need to Know about Soy Formula

I’m not sure about other cities, but in New York’s little cafes, it seems like ‘soy’ is just about as trendy as POM (the overly priced pomegranite drink guaranteed to boost your general health). I have heard many moms talk about how they feed or plan to feed their child soy as if this is the new health rage. The assumption is that if soy is good for mom, it must be good for babes. The truth is that soy is great–if medically indicated. Soy formula uses plant based protein (found in soy beans) to replace the protein in regular … Continue reading

From the Forums: What Exactly Is in Formula Anyways?

‘From the Forums’ is a new feature I would like to introduce to the baby blog. My purpose? To get baby blog readers into the forums and forum participants reading our blogs. Every blog in the ‘from the forums’ series will address an issue brought up in the forums and will link to that forum for further discussion. Likewise, the forum in question, will have a link to the appropriate blog. Our first topic is what exactly is in formula. As you likely are aware there are a variety of formulas to choose from. Some babies seem to care less … Continue reading

When It Is a Struggle To Breastfeed

Many women have difficulties when trying to breastfeed. I’ve never really put myself in that class of women because I’ve always had an ample supply, and my babies have always latched on easily. This baby is no different. However, I found myself wanting to give up breastfeeding last week. I was in a lonely place. I was severely sleep deprived due to 3 nights of pretty much no sleep as I trialed eggs in my diet to see if my little guy could tolerate them. He can’t. I realized, that I also have a struggle with breastfeeding, but it is … Continue reading

Food Allergies and Family History

There are many reasons why knowing your family health history is important to taking care of your own health and the health of your children. Understanding certain health risks comes from knowing your family’s health history going back a generation or two. For food allergies, however, it is only important to know what you and your baby’s other parent are allergic to. Children with a parent who is allergic to a food are twice as likely to develop an allergy to that food than children without an allergic parent. If both parents are allergic to a food, than the baby … Continue reading

There’s Blood In My Daughter’s Poop?

We first noticed that our daughter’s poop looked a little strange when she was two months old. It had taken on sort of a purplish hue. We took her to her pediatrician to test it, and discovered it contained blood. I immediately eliminated dairy and soy from my diet, which helped at first, but the blood came back. Then I did block feeding to correct a possible foremilk/hindmilk imbalance, which helped at first, but the blood came back. Then I tried Dr. Sears’ Elimination Diet. Everything I tried seemed to work at first, but the blood always came back. She … Continue reading
