Super Summer Snapshots

National Parks are gearing up for what could be a record breaking summer in terms of visitors. With the price of gas hovering near record highs, a new AP poll shows that an increasing number of families are planning to vacation close to home in the coming months. If you are looking to spend at least part of your summer vacation touring some of the country’s most spectacular natural gems, then don’t forget to pack your camera. After all, being able to snap keepers of America’s best parks isn’t something most hobby photographers get to do everyday. So, how can … Continue reading

Visitors = No Naps?

Does your baby’s nap schedule change when you have visitors? I’m not talking about the inevitable excitement that your baby experiences when new faces are in the house. A baby is bound to be a little more wound up and restless than normal when new people are around. I’m talking about purposely changing a baby’s nap routine so that the baby is awake as much as possible when the guests are over. When our baby was little, she slept just as well, if not better, in someone’s arms as she did in her crib. Having visitors over made almost no … Continue reading

The Big Morning Breakfast

As fate (or luck, or fortune, or something else) would have it, an aunt moved in next door to us. My sister-in-law, to be more precise. (I’ll leave it to the reader to decide whether this is good or bad fate/luck/fortune/etc. — I think it’s clearly in the “good” camp). At any rate, this situation has provided our son the ability to constantly interact with a family member as if they were just next door (because, you know, she is). After being away from family for so long we can really tell that our son enjoys knowing that at the … Continue reading

The Two Nap Day

Normally our son takes one nap a day. Depending on when he went to sleep the night before and when he decided to wake up that morning are normally accurate gauges for when we might expect him to take his daily snooze. Since summer has been in full swing for so long it’s been more common to have a late night, a late morning, and a late nap each day. This system, of course, perpetuated itself. The late rising kept a late nap and a late bedtime. At any rate, the one nap day has been his common operating procedure … Continue reading

The Walt Disney Family Museum

To keep many of his animators from being drafted, Walt Disney struck a deal with the government to create promotional material during the Second World War. I’ve written twice now about things relating to The Walt Disney Family Museum, but I realized that I’ve never covered details about the museum itself. Before it opened it was examined here on the families.com Disney blog, but now that it’s been in operation for over a year let’s look at the institution again. The Walt Disney Family Museum was co-founded by Diane Disney Miller, eldest daughter of Walt Disney, and Richard Benefield in … Continue reading

Movie Legend Museum

John Wayne fans have you been to Mount Pleasant, Texas lately? If not you might want to add it to your travel itinerary. That’s where you will find a collection of one-of-a-kind memorabilia loving displayed by a true blue fan of “The Duke.” Harry Brown will tell you his vast stash of all things related to Wayne is what inspired him to build the Legends and Lawless Museum. The modest structure is home to Brown’s vast Wayne collection and other western memorabilia. The museum is located at 2747 Old Paris Road near Mount Pleasant High School, and you’ll know that … Continue reading

Kid-Friendly Vacation Destinations with Meaning

I just received an email from my friend who wanted to brag about (I mean share the good news) that her family’s spring break vacation plans to California are now complete. They don’t depart on their trip for another two months, but she’s delighted nonetheless. I don’t blame her. Planning a cross-country trip for a family of five is no easy task. Her three children will have a blast and I’m sure she and her husband will too. My pal’s email inspired me to write this blog about family vacations. Beyond the thrill of visiting a new city, having fun … Continue reading

Visiting Bambi in Florida

No, not at Walt Disney World. Head south to the lower Florida Keys and you’ll find the National Key Deer Refuge. Established in 1957, its first manager used to leave polite notes on the windshields of cars owned by repeat poachers–that’s before he put a few bullet holes in the gas tank or the engine. Time has not diminished the fervency refuge managers display to protect the diminutive deer in their care. Only now they use more orthodox measures to secure the safety of the endangered Key deer. You can see their tactics first hand when you visit the 8,400-acre … Continue reading
