Chocolate Flavored Toddler Formula

The babies who have been in our care were all formula fed. They didn’t have any issues with the formula and tolerated the formula provided through WIC. These babies were good eaters and consumed enough ounces appropriate for their development. When babies turn one they move up from formula to whole milk. Their bodies aren’t ready for whole milk before one year. Formula manufacturers don’t want to lose this lucrative market just because a child doesn’t need formula anymore. To fill this niche, next stage toddler formula was created. Toddler formula has many of the same nutrients found in whole … Continue reading

From the Forums: What Else is In Formula?

I began a new feature yesterday in the baby blog called ‘from the forums’ where we discuss a question that has recently been raised in the forums. In these features, you will always find links between the blog and the appropriate forum. Yesterday we talked about the types of carbohydrates (sugars) that are in formula as well as the type of proteins that are in formula. Today, we’ll tackle the rest of formula ingredients: fats, vitamins and minerals and additional nutrients. DHA & ARA If you’re feeding your infant formula you’ve undoubtedly heard all the hoopla about two fats that … Continue reading

Can You Save Money with Generic Drugs

You can save up to 80 percent off the cost of a prescription drug when you opt to get the generic version instead of the name brand version. Minimally, you should save at least 30 percent with a generic drug. Why Do Generic Drugs Cost Less Most, but not all, common prescription medication has a generic counterpart available for you that is much less expensive. The reason behind the lower cost is mostly because the maker of the generic drug did not have to develop the drug from scratch, do the testing and bring the drug to the market. The … Continue reading

Saving Money on Frontline

This week it was time to buy more Frontline medication. I like to buy in bulk, as long as I can be assured that the meds won’t expire before the year is out. I selected 12-month packs of feline and canine Frontline and put them in my virtual shopping cart, and then was amazed at the price. $300? That seems like way more than I’ve ever paid for it before. When my husband came home, I asked him about it. Did he remember their flea/tick medicine costing this much, because I didn’t. He said no, although it was maybe $200 … Continue reading

Compounding Pet Medications: Is It Safe?

It can be tricky getting them to take their meds One of the latest health scares has been over a strain of meningitis that’s killed multiple people. According to WebMD, the meningitis originates from a compounding pharmacy in Massachusetts. Compounding is the practice of putting more than one type of medication in a pill, or basically changing the medication in some way from its original formula. How is this relevant for the pet owner? Compounding is a common practice in pet medications. Before you worry: the meningitis came from a human medication for back pain and it seems the authorities … Continue reading

More Good News From My Health Insurance Company

Today, I unexpectedly got a letter from my health insurance company. It wasn’t a bill, and it wasn’t a letter telling me that they were going to increase my premiums, or drop my coverage. Instead, it was filled with good news about things that will soon be covered by my health insurance policy. I’ve only had my health insurance plan for a couple of months. I haven’t actually had a reason to use it, yet. Fortunately, I haven’t gotten into any serious accidents, and have been relatively healthy. The only problems I’ve been having are allergy related and I find … Continue reading

The Need for Protein (Part V)

…. directly continued from Part IV Pasteurization is when the milk is heated to a specific temperature for certain amount of time and then immediately cooled. This process is said to kill any potentially harmful bacteria. There are two main types of pasteurization: low heat (just plain pasteurization) and high heat (ultra pasteurization). While, regular pasteurization, kills any potentially harmful bacteria it also destroys important and valuable nutrients like whey protein, enzymes that aid digestion, and its natural phosphates which are necessary to properly absorb its calcium. Ultra pasteurization kills all the nutrients in the milk that have a short … Continue reading

Salvaging Stained Sinks

The guy who installed our stainless steel sink advised that I clean it daily with a soft cotton rag and warm water. He also left some literature explaining that sink owners should wipe in the direction of the fine lines to maximum cleaning efforts. Basically, the idea is to remember to wipe down your stainless steel sink because if you let it air dry you will likely have to deal with water spots and streaks. To get that shiny, mirror-like appearance you will need to dry it with a cloth. Personally, water marks are the least of my worries. I’m … Continue reading

Tackling Furniture Stains

How did your furniture fare during your Thanksgiving get-together? If your sofa saw more stuffing stains than your tablecloth, then you are likely in need of some serious cleaning solutions. Fortunately, there are a number of reputable commercial cleaning products on the market today that allow furniture owners to tackle stain-busting on their own without having to call in the experts. However, before taking on the task, you will need to locate the cleaning instructions on your particular piece of furniture. The manufacturer lists cleaning suggestions and warns against the use of certain products on cleaning tags that are attached … Continue reading

Ear Yeast Infections in Dogs

Two weeks ago my dog alarmed me by revealing, when she was in the process of scratching one of her ears, a series of both large and small scabs inside that ear. I immediately checked both, but only the right ear sported any scabs. Neither ear looked too dirty, nor displayed any immediately obvious signs of mites. Unfortunately, I was visiting friends for the weekend and thus out of town, so because it wasn’t an emergency, I could not seek any veterinary care right away. I used antibiotic ointment on her ears whenever she scratched a scab open (which happened … Continue reading
