Road Trip with Baby

As if traveling last month with my baby on his first plan trip wasn’t enough, we decided to make a big road trip last week to the beautiful Lake Tahoe for a family member’s wedding. I knew my older two children would be easily entertained in the car with movies and my iPod, but was really worried about how my 9 month old would do. The only other car trip that we went on with him since he was born, was about a 4 hour trip. This one was much longer (closer to 9 hours), but on that 4 hour … Continue reading

Traveling With a Three Month Old

We have taken a lot of long trips with our son beginning when he was three months old. Many of our trips were from Texas to the midwest, a fifteen hour drive. Our biggest concern was how our son would handle such a long trip at such a young age. Thinking ahead, I knew that my cluster feeder would need to nurse frequently but nursing him in the car while the car was in motion was not an option. I could not fathom having to stop every hour or so to nurse our son especially since we can normally make … Continue reading

Traveling During Pregnancy Part V

3:30 We are on the last leg of our long drive. At this point we both need a snack. I have a bag with dry snacks and some apples. I pass some crackers back to my son and he says, “Thank you Mommy!” I have some peanuts and an apple as a snack which makes me think of caramel apples! Yum! 4PM If we are on track and on time, we should arrive at our destination in one hour, but I have a feeling that it is going to take us a bit longer than that based on my math … Continue reading

Traveling During Pregnancy Part III

8AM We have only been driving for an hour and II was hoping that I could make at least two hours before needing to stop to use the restroom. After finishing my latte and with a baby bouncing on my bladder, it seems that stopping sooner than I anticipated is going to be a necessity. I just need to find the perfect place to stop. Since we do not need gas yet, I am thinking that a rest stop would provide the perfect stopping grounds with easy access to the interstate. 8:30 So far there has been no rest stops … Continue reading

Traveling During Pregnancy Part I

I have spent the last two days preparing for a long drive to visit my sister, her husband, and their precious four week old baby girl. This will be my first long drive with just the kids, granted one is in utero. I suspect that pregnancy will have an affect on the road trip because I have never traveled more then two hours away while I was this pregnant. None the less this is a visit that I have been looking forward to for the last ten weeks at least (ever since my sister’s visit for her baby shower). Still … Continue reading

Relief for Parents Traveling with Kids

There is finally some good news for parents flying commercial airlines with young children. If you are planning to take to the skies during the upcoming holiday season, you will find things a wee bit easier as you make your way through airport security. Last week, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano announced that kids 12 and younger will no longer be forced to remove their shoes at TSA checkpoints. In addition, Napolitano said that children will not have to suffer through pat downs as often, and those, who get selected for the extra screening, will do so at the hands … Continue reading

Planning a Baby Shower Part IV

I am still in in the middle of planning a baby shower for my sister who is thirty-three weeks pregnant. She and her husband live out of state and will be traveling “home” for a quick visit, which means this is the only opportunity to throw her a baby shower for her first child. The invitations have been written, addressed, stamped (with floral stamps), and sent. I have even received a few RSVP’s; four out of fifty so far. While the invitations were initially my biggest concern, now that there written and sent, I can focus my energy on more … Continue reading

My Last Blog

This is going to be my last blog as the Adoption Blogger for Families.com. I’m looking forward to spending the summer with my kids, possibly working at their school, and taking on new writing projects. I may well guest blog occasionally for this or other Families blogs. It seems the Adoption Blog will continue, so I hope this blog, along with Families’ forums, can be a source of information and community for adoptive parents, adoptees, and birth parents. Yesterday I could think of a million things to say in my last few blogs and wondered how I would fit it … Continue reading

Baby Gifts for Tough Times

In these tough economic times, it might be hard to decided what to get that baby in your life for the holidays. Did you know the average toy for a baby runs between $40 and $60? Must have strollers and other equipment can run into the hundreds. But babies need love and good care above all else. They would rather spend time engaged with loving people than playing with a top-rated toy by themselves. Young babies in particular, need very little in terms of toys no matter what the toy experts may lead you to believe. Study after study has … Continue reading

Name Your Baby After Mussolini and Other Weird Baby News

Struggling about choosing a baby name? If you live in southern Italy, your choice might be profitable. That is because for residents of five villages in the Basilicata region of Italy, naming your baby after Mussolini or his wife will get you 1,500 euros, or the equivalent of about $1900.
