Most Popular Pet Names of 2012

One thing we see a lot of this time of year is lists of baby names: the top baby names for the year, and names that are projected to be popular in the coming year.  What we don’t expect to see are studies of a different sort of name: dog names.  But that’s just what MSN did, compiling a list of the top puppy names for 2012. A familiar name tops the list: Bella.  It’s been a popular female dog name since 2006, thanks to the “Twilight” craze.  I can attest to that; Chihiro was originally named Bella when we … Continue reading

Popular Baby Names of the Last 100 Years

The other day, I was reading an article about how certain baby names are outlawed in certain countries. For example, in New Zealand, you can’t name your baby Adolph Hitler due to a law that states any name can be refused that “might cause offense to a reasonable person, is unreasonably long or without adequate justification.” Well, thank goodness for that law. Anyhow, Social Security Online listed the five most popular baby names for boys and girls by year from 1909 until 2008. Um, let me see…my real name is Mary Elizabeth…I wonder where I rank. Well, I can proudly … Continue reading

Based on E.B. White’s classic children’s book and a remake of an animated movie by the same name, “Charlotte’s Web” is a wonderfully sweet and funny movie for the whole family. Dakota Fanning stars as Fern, a young girl who lives on a farm with her mother and father. They have been selling off their farm animals in order to buy the equipment they need to stay afloat, and when their sow delivers a litter, it’s known that those pigs will have to go too. When Fern sees her father getting ready to slaughter the runt of the litter because … Continue reading

Doogal (2006)

When I first rented this movie, I expected my kids to enjoy it, but I didn’t realize I would too. Doogal (voiced by Daniel Tay) is a cute furry dog who belongs to a girl named Florence. One day, while pursuing his ever-consuming quest for candy, Doogal accidentally breaks the town’s carousel, which has for years been the magic prison of a bad guy named Zeebad (Jon Stewart.) Zeebad is the twin brother of the town’s sorcerer Zebedee (Ian McKlellan) and he wants to take over the world by turning it into ice. He begins by freezing the carousel and … Continue reading

Tom Hanks Aids Italian Bride and Other Celebrities Heading Down the Aisle

Talk about a dream wedding… What blushing bride wouldn’t want Tom Hanks escorting her to the church on her wedding day? Sure, it would be even nicer if the hilarious actor were the one you were getting hitched to, but something is better than nothing. An Italian bride had the privilege of not only getting a Hanks escort, but the mega-movie star actually stopped production on his new film just so she could make it to the church in time to tie the knot. According to British newspapers, Hanks played a real life hero this week by halting filming on … Continue reading
