The Power of Finger Paint

finger paint If you are looking for a great activity for your toddler or preschooler, consider finger paint. Yes, I know it is messy, but you can't beat finger paint for a young child when it comes to discovery and development. From the colors to the squishy texture between little fingers, finger paint is an opportunity to learn all sorts of things. Here are a few tips to help you get the most you can from experiencing finger paint with your child.

As mentioned about, many parents are put off by the potential mess of finger painting. A little preparation can make all of the difference. There are even new products out there that are easy to use and eliminate some of the mess.

Cover your surface throughly to protect it. Yes, newspaper will work, but I found that an inexpensive plastic tablecloth, the kind you get to cover a table for birthday parties, is perfect. Don't forget the kid-sized smocks or old clothing.

Choose tempera paint rather than specialized paints. Tempera paint comes in many different and vivid colors, is non-toxic and washable (even after it dries). Some children don't like getting their hands messy, so provide some inexpensive paint brushes, or opt for paint pens, so they can still have fun with the paint.

Some things you can do with the finger paint beside swirling it around on paper include:

Using stamps or objects to make impressions on the paper.

Show your child how to make unique designs by squirting little bits of different color paint on the paper, then folding the paper closed, in half, and rubbing the outside of the paper to spread the paint inside.

Mix basic colors to make new ones (your child will think it is magic).

Run an object, such as a comb, along the paint-filled paper to make a pattern.

Coat each fingertip with a different color, and invite your child to make a rainbow.

Be sure to hang up your child's creations when he or she is done.
