The Poop Scoop

My nephew turned six months old last Friday. Boy how the time has flown. He lifts his head and looks around at the world with a pair of the widest blue eyes. He's trying so hard to sit up. He can crawl pretty well and he's got his hands into everything. He's also made the next big leap in his development.

That's right - solid food. He loves his peas. He adores his peas. He's been eyeballing our food for over a month, licking his lips and listing towards it. We kept mentioning it his mom, but she insisted that the development charts said he wasn't ready for it yet. But my nephew - he's a determined little booger.

Crackers and peas, pure baby delicacy. He eats it with such fervor and delight. That delight extends to the presents he makes for his mommy and his nana. His Aunt Heather got a real good whiff yesterday morning and all the memories of the golden transition from newborn to baby.

The days of the radiantly colored poop: green for the days he eats peas and green beans. Orange for when he is introduced to carrots. Deep yellow for the day he gets his first treat of squash. Grape juice added some real fun to it, as the baby gets older.

It's funny to get nostalgic over the color of the poop - but it's definitely a time to treasure. They grow up so fast from here. The hop, skip and jump from mushy peas to Quaker Oatmeal to their first nibbles of meat and mashed potatoes. But the poop, oh to wax poetic about the poop, - the vibrant colors - they mark are a milestone.

When you write down those milestones in your baby book. You'll write down their first smile, their first holiday, the first time they rolled over and the first time they took a bite of solid food. Save yourself a smile for a day down the road and be sure to write down the first rainbow color that your baby makes for you.
