The Farmer’s Market Part III

When I arrived home from my farmer’s market excursion, my son was crying and relieved to see me. I picked him up and he hugged me tightly. Then I asked him why he was so sad because I had never seen him get so upset when he stayed home with daddy. He told me that he was worried about me when I was at the “market,” as he calls it. Throughout the rest of the day he told me over and over again that he was worried about me when I was gone at the “market.” I vowed to take … Continue reading

The Farmer’s Market Part II

As it turns out my daughter was fairing better than reported while I was taking my weekly early morning “mommy break” at the farmer’s market with my sister. I am not against taking the kids with me to the farmer’s market but being able to go by myself serves two purposes. First, I finally get a much needed break from my adorable children. Second, I am able to talk with the farmer’s about how they produce their food to ensure that I am getting truly local and chemical free products (it is shocking at how many vendors are not selling … Continue reading

Theme Vacations Part 2

During a recent visit to my aunt and uncle’s, I popped into my 11-year-old cousin’s room and noticed big black X’s on each day of his calendar. It could only mean one thing: the countdown to summer vacation had begun. That of course means I don’t have much time to finish this vacation blog. So, here we go…part two of “Theme Vacations.” Part one covered everything from professional football training camps to outlet malls. The idea is to pick a central theme and plan your trip accordingly. We continue the list with: Farmers’ Markets—From pickled beets to smoked meats and, … Continue reading

My Favorite Meal of the Day

With pregnancy came the necessity to increase my protein intake by more than double of what I would normally get in a day. In order to meet my protein quota I would eat two eggs for breakfast every single morning. At first I ate two fried eggs over medium with a piece of toast, but once morning sickness kicked in, I developed an aversion to toast (and I could not eat over medium eggs without toast). Because of my busy and early morning schedule, I would have two eggs scrambled. At about twelve weeks my midwife told be that I … Continue reading

Seasonal Travel: Spending Thanksgiving in New Mexico

My parents met and married in Albuquerque, New Mexico and subsequently spent a number of Thanksgivings in the land of hot air balloons and roasted chilies. They now live in the land of pineapples and big surf. Hawaii is a popular holiday destination, but you’d be surprised at how many visitors descend on New Mexico during the long Thanksgiving weekend. Many hotels and resorts in the area are offering Thanksgiving packages, which include elaborate turkey spreads, but it is New Mexico, so don’t be surprised if your meal features a Southwestern accent. Common holiday dishes such as green chili and … Continue reading

Exploring The Great State of Wisconsin

I’ll be honest; it took me a while to embrace the state of Wisconsin. Can you blame me? I moved to the Dairy State from sun-kissed shores of Hawaii to attend school. I eventually settled in the northeast portion of the state when I accepted a job there and later made it my “home” when I married a Wisconsin native. Whereas, I have blogged about Wisconsin’s many natural attributes I realize I’ve only scratched the surface. My current home state has a ton to offer visitors (many of whom come in droves during the fall and winter to watch their … Continue reading
