The Shopping Cart Cover

The shopping cart cover does seem a bit frivolous and unnecessary at first glance, but its usefulness extends beyond keeping germs at bay. My purpose for getting one of these never had anything to do with germs in the first place. I have a lot of reasons I like my shopping cart cover, though, and here are a few: 1. It’s a crumb catcher. In my family, grocery shopping time is snack time. Snacks ensure that my time shopping is uninterrupted and somewhat peaceful. As long as my 18-month-old has crackers and a sippy cup, he will let me shop … Continue reading

The Curse of the Shopping Cart

I’ve always maintained that my daughter is one smart cookie (I’m her mother, what do you expect?), but I recently discovered that she is even wiser than I give her credit for. Since she was a newborn, my daughter has hated shopping carts. She would scream each time I placed her infant seat in one and wouldn’t stop screeching until I removed her from it. This trend continued during her toddler and preschool years. Now that she is six, I don’t even bother suggesting that she ride in a cart because my groceries would never fit if she actually took … Continue reading

Kids + Shopping Carts = Stomachaches

A few years back numerous studies were done to detect how much bacteria covered grocery store shopping cart handles. The studies confirmed that shopping cart handles had more germs than public restrooms. Researchers made their rounds on TV news programs claiming that shopping carts were one of the worst public places for germs and that shoppers should take precautions. Now, it seems some grocery store customers are getting help from the government (well, at least residents in Arkansas are) to stay healthy while shopping. State lawmakers are trying to pass a law to get stores to clean their carts. The … Continue reading

Ask A Baby Blogger: Playing Rough with the Baby

My husband comes from a big family of boys, there are four of them and his dad. Our son is just eight months old, but they are always swooping him up and throwing him in the air. I was glad once when he threw up on one of his uncles. My husband gives me a hard time, because he says the baby is having fun so why am I so opposed. Help? I don’t blame you for being concerned. Honestly, you have to be careful when you are throwing a baby up in the air, your baby can’t communicate how … Continue reading

The Dangerous Shopping Cart

When you go shopping do you put your baby in a shopping cart? Now the AAP along with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is saying that if you have a reasonable alternative–use it. Some 24,000 children are rushed to the emergency room each year as a result of shopping cart injuries. Children stand or are strapped in improperly and fall onto the hard grocery store floor resulting in head and neck injuries, fractures, and even concussions. The AAP also points out that most shopping carts are designed with a high center of gravity which makes them prone to tipping … Continue reading

Parents Against Ice Cream

Not just any ice cream, Ben and Jerry’s newest flavor: Schweddy Balls. Don’t let the name fool you, the limited edition ice cream doesn’t include the stench of perspiration. However, it does feature balls. Not those kind. Regardless, a conservative parent group doesn’t like the sound, taste or insinuation of Schweddy Balls and it wants you to hate the frozen treat too. The group, dubbed One Milllion Moms, is asking parents around the world to boycott the ice cream with the fetid sweat name. “The vulgar new flavor has turned something as innocent as ice cream into something repulsive,” the … Continue reading

Why I’m Losing the Mom Hair

Get this: the week I got pregnant, I got a sudden impulse to walk over to a salon during my lunch hour and chop off four inches of my long hair. Granted, I needed a trim, but looking back I’m not sure such a drastic cut was necessary. When I found out I was pregnant a week or two later, I decided I might as well take that hair cut once step further and get a “hot mom haircut.” That was the exact phrase I used to describe the hair I was going for while talking to my stylist. In … Continue reading

Natural Sugars vs. Added Sugars

Do you have a sweet tooth? I sure do! But… there’s a long history in my family of diabetes. I do worry about how much sugar I get in my diet — both added sugar and natural sugar. Naturally sweet produce like fruits and some veggies (sweet potatoes, carrots, etc) make up a big part of my diet. There is a big difference between natural sugars and added sugars. The sugars in fruits and vegetables certainly aren’t as dangerous as added sugars. In fact, nutrition experts say that natural sugars don’t raise your diabetes risk the same way added sugars … Continue reading

Amazon’s Bestselling Books – November 2007

Wondering what everyone in America is reading right now? I was a little curious myself and decided to take a look at Amazon’s bestseller list. I was pretty surprised to see how many nonfiction titles were listed amongst the top ten, but I do understand that twice as many nonfiction as fiction books are published per year, so maybe I shouldn’t have been so surprised. Coming in at #1: “You: Staying Young: The Owner’s Manual for Extending Your Warranty” by by Michael F. Roizen and Mehmet C. Oz. This book was written to help us understand how our bodies age … Continue reading
