Unique Family Planning

When did you know it was time to start or add to your family? Did you have a master plan in regards to becoming a parent or did you leave it up to fate? Many people factor in finances, emotional and physical health, as well as age before opting to procreate. It is very rare that something as obscure as a major construction project would play into baby-making. However, if you believe the media you might think twice about that theory. According to the several news sources, a “Carmageddon” baby boom may be taking place in Los Angeles right now. … Continue reading

The Second Week Post-Partum Part I

While my first week post-partum was spent taking it easy (to the best of my ability given my “get it done” personality). By the second week I was ready and almost needing to get out of the house. The opportunity presented itself very soon with an invitation to dinner with my husband’s parents and siblings. Leaving the house for the first time to socialize can be a bit intimidating after one has just had a baby but at eight days post partum, I was feeling really good. I have a very small transitional wardrobe from after my son’s birth. One … Continue reading

Introducing Pets to Newborns, Pt. 1

I am currently babysitting the newborn of a friend until the baby is old enough to go to daycare. The baby will only be at my house for six days, but this is a good opportunity to begin training my dog in how to behave around infants once the time comes for me to have a baby of my own. My dog behaved better than I feared when my friend arrived with her newborn. Our previous experiences with Chihiro at the houses of friends with babies indicated that she might constantly try licking the baby’s face, something she does with … Continue reading

Pregnancy Apps for Smart Phones

I’ve blogged about a few apps that are available for iPhones, but did you know there are many pregnancy apps for other smart phones as well? Android phones are becoming very popular these days and offer quite a few apps via the Google Marketplace. This month I had the thrill of test driving an EVO 4G for the purposes of trying out some of the pregnancy apps, courtesy of the generous people of Sprint. (Can I just note that I am in love with this phone and I’m already mourning having to mail it back this week? It’s a fun … Continue reading

And You Thought Your Kid Was Smart

Most parents are constantly trying to educate their children. They read to them, sing to them, and expose them to visually stimulating environments. In some cases it pays off and the child becomes a voracious learner always ready to take on a new challenge. Other kids, not so much. Then, there are the rare occasions when the child surpasses all expectations and reveals that she is smarter than her parents… before she is potty trained. Such is the case with Elise Tan-Roberts of Edmonton in North London. The 2-year-old girl has an IQ of 156 and is rated in the … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: July 2008

Two of my three children are summer babies. That is, they were born in the summer and had their first months surrounded by sunshine streaming in the windows, the sound of birds chirping, and days spent wearing nothing but a diaper and a “onsie.” I made sure that they had Fourth of July outfits ready, even though one of them arrived a week after the holiday. I guess he just wasn’t interested in the parade. Do you have a summer baby, too? We had a lot of new information to share this past month, such as recall notices and new … Continue reading

Games and Activities That Build Sound Awareness

We’ve been talking in the baby blog a little about activities to do with your baby. I mentioned in my first article that I think just getting out and making a point to interact with your baby, carry your baby, etc. is good stimulation. However, this series is designed to give you some ideas if you want to plan activities with your baby. These are also excellent ideas for those of you who have preemies. Animals Babies can learn to associate all sorts of sounds with animals. On top of that, if you browse a baby book section, you’ll find … Continue reading

Taking Pictures with the Easter Bunny

So yesterday my 3-year-old daughter and I hopped down to the mall to visit Peter Cottontail. She was excited to tell the Easter Bunny what she wanted to find in her basket on Easter Sunday (that’s why he’s sitting in Santa’s chair isn’t it?) and I was thrilled to finally get a picture of my little one perched on Floppy’s lap. You see, my daughter has always been deathly afraid of any and all costumed characters. She has run screaming from Santa (multiple times); won’t go near Mickey, Minnie, any of the Care Bears, Dora, or Blue; heck, she even … Continue reading

Planning Your Babymoon

You may have heard the term “babymoon” and wonder what it means. Simply put, a babymoon is the period of time just after your new baby is born. When you first got married, the honeymoon was that period of time just after your wedding. The couple spends time alone together, bonding as a married couple. A babymoon is similar, only it’s your new baby you will be bonding and enjoying alone time with. This is the first two weeks or so at home with your new baby. It’s a beautiful time for the parents and baby to get to know … Continue reading

As a Parent. . .I Have Arrived

Arrived at what I cannot tell you, but I am definitely there. Just listen to my day yesterday: We homeschool our older children. So I managed to homeschool my older three children while taking the twins to the potty every twenty minutes. (Look soon for my ‘Tales from the Potty’ blogs.) Everyone learned something in the process. My older children learned vocabulary, statistics, and that twins are in fact smart enough–even at nineteen months–to play tricks on you. For their vocabulary lesson, we learned the word ‘misnomer’. For example, the ‘terrible twos’ is a misnomer because in actuality the they … Continue reading
