Spring is Consignment & Outgrown Sale Season

To save money on children’s clothing, I make sure to shop the large children’s outgrown sales (also known as consignment sales). There I can pick up a fancy Easter dress for $5, boys jeans for $2, and an assortment of other clothing to outfit my three kids. I’ve been shopping at outgrown sales and taking advantage of community swaps for a long time now, ever since my now middle school child was a baby. I have the say that things have certainly changed with outgrown children’s sales since that time. First of all, the prices are much higher. What was … Continue reading

An Important Family Outing Part III

With over twenty acres of Christmas Trees at the tree farm of our choice, we knew that we could find the perfect Christmas Tree by going early to find it and tag it. What I did not anticipate was how the dry spring and summer would affect the trees. Many of the Balsam Firs had dry, brown, and brittle needles proving that the tree was water deprived. Since our son was already running deeper into the grove that seemed to contain a good number of Balsam and Fraser Firs (the trees of my choice). With my ten month old daughter … Continue reading

Do You Put Pictures of Your Baby on Facebook?

It’s hard to believe Facebook didn’t even exist ten years ago. It seems everyone has a profile these days. Whether you’re a 13-year-old chatting with her friends about homework, a businessman doing networking, or a grandma oohing and ahhing over the latest pictures of her grandchildren, Facebook has something for everyone. I use Facebook as a means to keep in instant contact with my family and friends. When your closest immediate family member lives states away, easy communication is a must. Uploading pictures is simple, and everyone can easily see new and updated pictures of my daughter. Facebook is a … Continue reading

Who Wants a Bouncing Baby Boy?

My last blog told about the much-longer wait times experienced by couples adopting from China. I mentioned that one reason is that most adoptive parents wish to adopt a girl. Most adoptive families, even those who want girls themselves, are surprised to hear how many other adoptive families want girls also. Some theories on why this preference exists are: that it’s mostly the prospective mother who drives the adoption process, and she may want a girl like herself, or that single mothers may feel that they can more effectively provide a role model to a child of the same gender. … Continue reading

Halloween for Baby

Our son is not yet 3 months old. He doesn’t eat candy. We’re not especially fond of taking him into public places to meet strangers with H1N1 going around. We’re also not at “home.” All of this has made the decision to not trick-or-treat much easier. However, there is a part of me that is regretting not dressing our son up like something for his first ever theatrical opportunity. My love of “pretend” is somewhat being squashed by circumstances beyond my control. A lengthy trip tomorrow (at least a whole day of driving) followed by scrambled organization for returning to … Continue reading

Getting Ready for Outgrown Sales

I have to confess that I am very excited about tomorrow. That is because two of the biggest children’s outgrown sales are taking place in my area. These outgrown sales are a great way to pick up plenty of bargains and fill in the wardrobes for my children. There are also plenty of toys, books and games to be had as well. Today I sat down to make a list of the needs for the kids. This is important because it helps me avoid buying things that we don’t really need and forgetting things that we really do. For example, … Continue reading

YouTube Christmas House Tours

Going on Christmas house tours are lots of fun. Not only can you enjoy beautiful decorations and furnishings, but you can get some ideas for decorating your own home. Just this past weekend, we visited a room that was a early century library, all decorated for Christmas. I loved pretty much every part of it and joked that I was taking my photos so we could reproduce the room at home. Of course, the high ceiling and the friezes might present a bit of a problem, but you get the idea. While visiting homes in person is always nice, it … Continue reading

Dad Dupes Mom and Names Kid After Republican Ticket

Can you say doghouse? If you’re Mark Ciptak then you’re not only familiar with its pronunciation but you’re also used to its smell by now. The Tennessee resident and father of a newborn daughter is making headlines for secretly naming his baby girl Sarah McCain Palin after the Republican presidential and vice presidential candidates John McCain and Sarah Palin. Ciptak, who works for the American Red Cross, told news reporters that he named his third child after John McCain and Sarah Palin to “to get the word out” about the campaign. “I took one for the cause,” Ciptak told local … Continue reading

Should You Worry About Infant Abductions?

We have all heard the scary stories about babies being taken away from their parents. I remember worrying so much about this when each of my children were infants. What if someone came in to the hospital and snatched our child? What if I turned away for a moment at the grocery store and turned back to find that my child wasn’t there. Of course, the worry that your child will go missing stays with you probably forever. I still make sure to keep my kids in site at all times whenever we are in public. When I gave birth … Continue reading
