Keep Toddlers In Rear-Facing Carseats

The news came out today that the official recommendations for child safety seat use were updated. The news wasn’t news to me, however. I had been telling people about the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations for years. The child safety seat law is that children must remain rear facing to one year old and twenty pounds. The AAP recommends that children remain rear facing to the weight/height limit of the seat or at least until age two. We all know how soft a baby’s skull is. Baby’s skull has an official soft spot on top too. I don’t know that … Continue reading

New Car Seat Guidelines

I was watching the Today show this morning when I heard that the American Academy of Pediatrics had changed their regulations for child car seat safety. With two children still in car seats, I was listening with all ears. The most surprising is their recommendation to keep your child rear-facing in their car seat until the age of two. Additional changes were that kids should remain in a booster until reaching at least 4 ft. 9 inches in height. This could happen anywhere between the ages of 8 and 12 years of age. Also, do not put your child in … Continue reading

Sunshine Kids Car Seats

I am kind of a car seat crazy person. I want my kids to be safe. You hear stories all the time about seats not being installed correctly, or about an accident that could have been avoided if only the child had been strapped in correctly to a car seat. So, when I had my first baby, I made sure to do my research. I found an acceptable infant car seat, but when it was time to move her up to a bigger one, I wanted one that was going to last, and one that was strong, and durable. I … Continue reading

How Safe Are Our Babies?

Another recall on a popular baby product happened last week. Did you hear about it? Johnson and Johnson recalled Aveeno baby lotions. You can find the source for my information here. In reading this article, I was shocked to hear that they had 12 different products recalled in the last year and a half. Isn’t that a little much for a name brand we trust so much? I can’t help but wonder, are our babies safe? The truth is, they probably are. However, we can’t help but be scared. We are, after all mamas who love our children. I was … Continue reading

Naming My Babies

For me, one of the most difficult parts of becoming a mother, whether the first time, or subsequent times is the naming part. Does anyone else have this problem? I come with a very long last name. It is a mouthful, frankly. I married into it. So, I wanted to make sure my kids’ names sounded good with our last name. But, naming is so much more than that isn’t? It seems that some couples have no problem knowing what they are going to name their child. They name them while they are in the womb and refer to that … Continue reading

Time Out Before Two Years Old

Once your child is older, time out can be a great tool for any parent when trying to teach your child what is wrong and right. But, in the beginning, time out can be frustrating for a mother of a smaller child. My son started doing plenty of naughty things when he was very young. He was so much more mischievous at a younger age compared to my daughter. He would write on the couch with lipstick, throw things and break them, grab knives out of the dishwasher, etc. etc. As soon as he could walk, I was in trouble! … Continue reading

Will a Baby Make You Happy?

If you think a baby will solve your unhappiness, you might be right. But, not for about 18 years. I was watching Oprah earlier this week, and she had an entire show about happiness. The thing that caught my attention was when they talked about whether or not having children will make you happy. The majority of the audience said yes. However, studies have shown that parents are the happiest when their children turn 18. Why does anyone want to have kids then? While this can seem like a depressing thought, it shouldn’t discourage us from having children. Motherhood is … Continue reading
