More Mobile Baby Part I

It has been more than a few weeks since my daughter’s sudden catapult into the mobile stage of babydom. By now she has more than mastered her crawling skills. What began as rocking propelled crawling and unsure balance, has evolved into frequent crawling marathons! She can and will crawl wherever, whenever she gets the notion. Before she had developed her crawling skills, she would roll and scooch her little self all over the house; even though it took her several minutes to get from one location to another. All that has changed! With her increased mobility, she is crawling directly … Continue reading

Start Simple

Many of the women in my scrapbooking club credit their children for inspiring them to scrapbook. Whereas I created my first scrapbook following a summer-long trip across the United States, the ladies I met through my local scrapbooking club say they would have never dreamed of designing layouts if it were not for the birth of their kids and the desire to document their baby’s milestones. Baby scrapbooks are some of the most popular themed memory albums around. If your first venture into the world of scrapbooking is a baby memory book, then I would suggest keeping it simple. It’s … Continue reading

Start a Baby Book Club

If you are looking for a fun play date activity for the little kids, then this might be your idea. Start up a baby book club. Not only will the kids (and the adults) have a great time, but there will also be a lot of learning going on. A baby book club is a great way to introduce children to the love of reading, logical thinking, and some socialization, too. 1. First determine who will be in the club. Ideally, children should be near the same developmental level. You can start a club for children that are as young … Continue reading

Monkey Business — Children’s Picture Books about Monkeys

Who doesn’t love a monkey? I found two adorable children’s picture books about the furry little creatures that I’d like to share with you today. The first is called “Hug,” and it is one of my favorite books of all time. My husband bought it for me for Mother’s Day about five years ago, and it was a perfect gift. He got major good husband points for that one. “Hug” is comprised almost entirely of pictures. At first we see a little monkey making his way through the forest. As he goes along, he sees different animal babies being hugged … Continue reading

Where to Find Summer Reading Programs

One of the things that kids like best about summer vacation is that they get a long break from school. It is important to keep your child’s reading skills sharp over the summer. A fun way to do that is to get your child involved in a summer reading program. There are several to choose from. Your local library The first place to seek out a summer reading program is your local library. Ask the librarian in the children’s section if they are doing this type of program. If so, he or she can help you get your child involved. … Continue reading

Can You Really Afford Cable?

Forget about alcohol, tobacco, Facebook or chocolate; cable TV is one of the most addicting entities around. Just ask the kids who spend hours upon hours watching it. Then, ask the parents who use it as a babysitter. These days it doesn’t take much to get moms and dads to admit that they’ve used cable to keep their kids occupied. Got an important phone call to make, turn on Nick Jr. Want to use the bathroom in peace, switch it to Cartoon Network. Desperate for a few minutes of uninterrupted me time, Disney Channel to the rescue. Cable is undoubtedly … Continue reading

Play Dates: A Germ Factory?

I’m a social person. I enjoy getting out and talking with other moms, especially other moms with babies. If they breastfeed, it’s an added bonus, because it means we will have lots to talk about. My baby and I laid pretty low this winter. I felt like I wanted to keep her protected from germs during flu season. Now that spring is upon us, I’m much more open to getting together with other people. In fact, this week alone, there are three play dates we are attending. I’m not sure what your experiences have been with play dates, but mine … Continue reading
