What’s New at FamilySearch? – Week of June 8, 2012

There are plenty of reasons why FamilySearch is one of the most popular genealogy websites. Raynaud’s Phenomenon

Do your fingers or toes discolor after being in the cold or the heat? This is a condition called Raynaud’s phenomenon. It can also occur after a tense or emotional upset. This happens because the blood supply is in a diminished state due to spasms of the blood vessels. When blood supply starts to deplete you will notice your digits to turn white at first. After that a bluish coloration will occur. This is because there is no oxygen present. When the blood vessels do open back up again you will notice that they will turn red. The most common … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: July 2008

Two of my three children are summer babies. That is, they were born in the summer and had their first months surrounded by sunshine streaming in the windows, the sound of birds chirping, and days spent wearing nothing but a diaper and a “onsie.” I made sure that they had Fourth of July outfits ready, even though one of them arrived a week after the holiday. I guess he just wasn’t interested in the parade. Do you have a summer baby, too? We had a lot of new information to share this past month, such as recall notices and new … Continue reading

How Do We Age?

Do you know the mechanics of how the skin ages? Here’s a quick look at the process. Throughout life, your skin naturally sheds dead cells and replaces them with younger ones. The new cells are generated within the top layer of the skin and migrate to the surface. In young, healthy skin, the cells take about twenty-eight days (four weeks) to reach the skin’s surface; they flake off almost two weeks later. In older skin, cells aren’t produced as quickly, forcing the old skin cells to stick around longer. After the age of forty, a few major changes affect your … Continue reading

Teaching Visual Learners

Teaching in itself can be a big undertaking. However when considering that you have the needs of a class of twenty or more students to fulfill may be overwhelming. Many teachers feel that planning lessons to meet the needs of everyone is a large job to handle. While intensive planning for some of these students may be, creating a diverse lesson does not have to be hard. Simply changing and adjusting a few of your teaching strategies can reach many more learners than one would expect. When considering the visual learners in your classroom, plan as many visual aides as … Continue reading

Skin Color Changes – What Do They Mean?

Has your baby changed color recently? No, I am not referring to a melanin shift in the skin turning pale skin dark or dark skin pale. No, I’m talking about what happens when your baby develops a mottling of purplish, pink or even blue areas on their body. Most often, a change in skin color is due to an immature circulatory system. Imagine for a moment, when we cry or we are upset, the skin on our faces changes color – deepening to a red or pink shade. We describe a very angry person as mottling purple and a very … Continue reading

Fashion Trends Displayed By The Fertile Female

I’ve blogged about celebrity fashion, kids fashion, fashion dos and fashion don’ts, but this is my first venture into fashion trends for the fertile woman. So what prompted this unusual foray into fertility and the fashionista? A new study released today by U.S. researchers concludes: women dress to impress when they are at their most fertile. According to researchers, the goal of the study was to prove that “signs of human ovulation may not be as mysterious as some scientists believe.” The study involved a panel of men and women assessing clothing choices of college females. Using the information provided … Continue reading

The Kitchen Sink: Wherever Did It Come From?

The classic plumbing definition of a sink is a bowl-shaped fixture made of porcelain or stainless steel that is used for washing hands or small objects such as dishes and underwear. The idea of a sink probably dates back to prehistoric times when Neanderthal man made water basins out of big rocks that eroded into a concave shape by centuries of rain. The idea of a kitchen sink came of course much later, when indoor fireplaces replaced open hearths and leopard skins and clubs gave way to “civilized” clothing and walking sticks. The kitchen sink has always been a mutant … Continue reading
