Toddlers and Cleaning Supplies

How do you store your cleaning supplies? Do you even give any thought to how you store them? I know I don’t think about it much, I store them here, there and everywhere. Under the kitchen sink of course, then there is a tote in the linen closet, each bathroom has stuff to keep the toilet clean. In each location as well I have a bag of cleaning rags, I don’t want to run to another room to wipe down the bathroom counters. The biggest issues with storing cleaners are safety ones. Are there little ones in your house who … Continue reading

TV Falls on Toddler

Before our home could be licensed as a foster home, we had to do a great deal of baby proofing. We would have done it all anyway, as we wanted to provide a safe environment for all children in our care. All furniture that is tall and can tip has been anchored to the wall. A toddler very close to me met a tragic end because he climbed up an unanchored dresser to get to the TV on top. He would have been two not long after the accident. We have an enormous TV in our living room. There’s no … Continue reading

Don’t Buy These with a Baby in the House

I have written in the homeschooling blog about how much my five year old son likes anything remotely related to science. He is especially thrilled with physical science. So when we saw the little Magnetix magnet kits in the store, we immediately thought we had a great Christmas present. But we eventually went with a cooler, bigger, more geekish science related toy and left the magnets on their shelf. Have you ever felt the magnet sets? They are surprisingly strong. They have to be, they are designed so that you can build structures with them. The sets contain several little … Continue reading

What Do You Do When Your Baby is Choking?

Several years ago I took a health class that included certifications in CPR for adults, children and infants. There were also lessons in how to relieve a choke on an adult, a child or an infant. At the time, I thought it was interesting information, but never really thought – oh I’ll need to know this later and yet, oddly enough not three months after I took the class and received my certifications – I did need that information. I was working as a waitress in a restaurant and I typically worked the early morning shift on the weekends because … Continue reading

Should You Let Your Special Needs Child…gulp…Date?

If you’re like me, this topic makes you say, “Yikes.” There’s something really nerve-wracking about the idea that our special needs child might someday date. This is especially true for parents of children with cognitive disabilities such as Down syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, and so forth. These children can be particularly vulnerable and it’s hard to imagine them handling any kind of romantic friendship, no matter how innocent. (Let’s face it, it’s not always pleasant picturing our neuro-typical kids dating either.) Here are some tips I would offer: Don’t panic. First, recognize that often times these special adolescents don’t even … Continue reading

Do You Know What a Safe Haven Is?

On September 1, 1999, Texas House Bill 3423 went into effect and it was the first law of its kind. The law was called a Safe Haven law and it allowed “parent or other person who is entitled to possess a child 30 days old or younger” to voluntarily leave that child in the possession of an emergency care provider. They would be legally immune to prosecution provided that they did not endanger the child during the delivery. Since that time, 45 states have followed. These and other laws like them were to protect the children that were abandoned as … Continue reading
