Remember, Babies are People Too

One of the hardest things to realize when you see your new baby is that they are so much more than a baby. They are just a teeny, tiny person. A person that has a personality, likes and dislikes, and traits that are all his own. With the birth of my third child, I have learned this even more. My 3rd looks a lot like my second. Since they are both boys, I find myself calling my 3rd by the name of my 2nd child. But, they are also alike in that they share similar problems with food sensitivities which … Continue reading

Babies, Flat Head Syndrome, and Insurance

Will your insurance company cover what could be considered a cosmetic treatment for your baby? It might if you can get a doctor to give that issue a specific diagnosis. It seems as though the Back to Sleep campaign has produced some unexpected, and unwanted, results. Does your baby have a flat spot at the back of his or her head? If so, you are not the only parent who has noticed this strange phenomena. Some people are referring to this condition as “flat head syndrome”. Oddly enough, your baby’s flat head may have happened as a result of something … Continue reading

Birthdays for Babies

My little “baby” just turned two. I can hardly believe it. I still think of him as a baby, but now, he is turning into such a little boy. When we had his 2nd birthday, we kept it simple. We only invited family over, opened a few presents, and ate cake and ice cream. It was pretty much the same thing we did for his 1st birthday too. For my daughter, she had a bigger birthday when she turned two. She had friends over, and we had a little slip n slide party in the backyard. I felt bad that … Continue reading

Don’t Wait Too Long

People say that babies are expensive, but the truth is, you’ll probably spend much more money on other things in your lifetime. Choosing to become a parent is one of those things you simply cannot sum up between a dollar sign and a decimal point. The gain you receive from having a child is worth more than you can imagine and the interest is compounded by the minute. Don’t worry about the sleepless nights, the spit up or the poopy diapers. Those days come and they go, and they don’t make up the substance of what is so wonderful about … Continue reading

Bouncing Babies: We Love Harvey Karp!

Yesterday we visited with a friend who has a newborn. As she bounced her baby from side to side, I remembered the same period in my daughter’s life. My daughter needed to be in constant motion in order to sleep or even to be calm. I blame it on my excessive hiking when I was pregnant: up and down, up and down before she was born. My daughter expected the same thing after she was on the outside, too. Harvey Karp’s book and DVD The Happiest Baby on the Block were so helpful to us in the newborn days. Karp … Continue reading

Can You Miss Your Kids Too Much?

You’ve heard of carsickness, airsickness and homesickness, but how many of you are familiar with the term “kidsickness?” I had never heard of such a thing until my friend’s daughter returned from summer camp a few weeks ago. Apparently, “kidsickness” is the new “it” phrase these days. It describes the overwhelming feeling of distress a parent experiences when their child is gone for an extended amount of time. I have little doubt that the medical community doesn’t consider this condition a serious matter, but still it’s worth examining. According to the little pamphlet my friend’s daughter returned home with, more … Continue reading

Babies Need to Crawl

I remember when my oldest daughter was of crawling age, she didn’t crawl. People told me how important it was to crawl, how I should have her checked out and how perhaps there was something wrong with her. The truth of the matter is, when it comes to gross motor skills, she’s always been a little slow. She gets there eventually, but she’s always at the end of what is considered “normal”. Interestingly, she’s a very good artist. But the point is, the common wisdom of the day was that babies should crawl. Skipping the crawling stage, is apparently becoming … Continue reading

Babies in the News: The Miracle of New Life

Do you remember when your baby was born? When you held him in your arms or the first time he cried and you were able to calm him for no other reason than that you were the mommy? It was my third daughter Meghan who was not breathing when she was born and although I’m sure it was only a few seconds before they were able to get her going, I thought it was an eternity. Life is a miracle and these stories just show that miracles happen around us all the time. Baby Revived After Being Dead Two week … Continue reading

Babies in the News: Baby Taken at Knifepoint

It’s enough to make a person ill, but a month old boy was kidnapped at knifepoint on December 1st. Smugglers who were seeking payment for having helped bring the boy’s parents to the United States illegally took him. The boy’s name is Bryan Dos Santos Gomes. His parents came to the United States from Brazil, but were unable to pay the smugglers who brought them the fees they demanded. The boy was taken when he and his mother were out with friends. They were approached by a woman in a black sports utility vehicle and taken for a ride. The … Continue reading
