Another Round of Babyproofing

I may have mentioned that my daughter is getting married. She is marrying her childhood sweetheart, it’s a very long story but the great news is that I’m getting a bonus granddaughter. My little Lillie Bean is just over a year old and at a very curious stage. Now having been a single mom of a pre teen and then a teenager for many years now, we are in no way a baby proofed household. I’m having to remember all the things I did when Hailey was little to keep her safe. If you are the single mother of a … Continue reading

Wearing Your Baby May Enhance Learning

Research is showing that babies who are worn often by their parents have increased visual and auditory alertness, two factors that contribute to a baby learning about the world. There are two factors that experts believe contribute to this phenomena. The first is that wearing a baby puts it into a state of content alertness. Instead of crying or demanding attention, the baby is quiet and happy. This situation of content alertness is the state when babies can process learning the best. Since babies who are worn have more time spent in quiet alertness, they have more opportunity to learn. … Continue reading

Protect Your Baby: Free DVD

Your baby could be in danger in your own home. Baby proofing is so important, but some areas of baby proofing can be easily missed. Any experienced parent probably has at least one or two stories of near misses where their baby narrowly avoided disaster, despite vigilant care. Babies can get into all kinds of things, and this can be dangerous. I recently hosted a play date where there were babies in attendance. Although I make every effort to baby proof the play areas, one very enterprising crawler got around my efforts. She pulled off one of those sticky pads … Continue reading

The Apgar Score

Immediately after birth, you baby will be given his first test. And while the baby is given the test, it is the parents who may be nervous. Welcome to the Apgar score, a quick appraisal of the health of your baby. Your baby is actually tested twice, using the Apgar test. The first test comes at one minute after birth, and the second test comes at five minutes after birth. The scale goes up to ten, although just as in the olympics, only the very few get tens. If you baby only gets a nine, don’t worry. This is still … Continue reading

The Danger of Artificial Turf

Many homes use artificial turf for porches, rugs, mats and more when real grass just wouldn’t do. There is also a growing trend in some parts of the country to replace real grass with artificial turf that never needs to be watered. But if you have children, you will want to steer clear of artificial turf, because there is a real health hazard for children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a health advisory against artificial turf because it may contain high levels of lead that could pose a health hazard to humans. The high lead … Continue reading

In tough economic times, families are cutting back everywhere. One practice that could be deadly is cutting back on formula. Some parents are actually watering down formula in order to make it stretch further. Not only is this unwise, holding back needed nutrition for you baby, but it could be fatal. Thanksgiving in the Emergency Room

We have been very fortunate. Up until this point, neither of my younger children had ever wound up in the emergency room. That all changed on the night before Thanksgiving, when our adventurous two-year-old (his first word after Mama and Dada was “uh-oh”) obtained a gash that required emergency care. It was our fault really. While our older children were sent off to bed, we kept our youngest up while we were finishing up putting the Christmas tree together. It was a way to spend some time with him alone, and finish up our task without the interruption of the … Continue reading
