Preparing for Shotsby Mary Ann Romans | More from this Blogger 18 Oct 2008 09:10 AM
Here are some ways to be prepared for the pediatrician when it comes to shots. Dress your child appropriately. This will make the visit so much easier. Forget about impressing the staff or the parents in the waiting room with a cute outfit. After all, your child will spend most of the time wearing just a diaper or underwear. Pick clothing that can be put on and off easily. In warm weather, have clothing that exposes an arm or thigh (depending on the child's age) for shots. It is easiest to get your baby dressed after the exam and before the shots, so you can just scoop her up in a hug and be done once the shot is given. Dressing a screaming child who is in pain is no fun. In the winter time, opt for a onsie and separate shirt and pants. This way you can get your child dressed most of the way before the shots. I really believe in being truthful about shots. While there is no need to cause anxiety days in advance, I always tell my kids in the office that they will get "a little owie, but it will go away." I started this even when they were babies. This way, they learn to trust me when I say something won't hurt, because they know I will tell them when it will. Knowing what to expect helps them, I think. My two-year-old, for example, sat right up on the exam table last week, pushed up his own sleeve and took his flu shot without a flinch. His older brother and sister did the same. Mary Ann Romans. What Is that Growing Red Spot on My Baby?
