Potty Training Our Son Part VI

We tried to encourage him by telling him that he would be such a big boy if he were to go poop on the potty. We told him that he would get two chocolates if he went poop on the potty. Despite our motivating words, he was very much against the reality of pooping on his “new” big boy potty. Once it became clear that he was not going to use the potty to go poop, we switched from using words, to physically picking him up and putting him on the potty. He continued to whine but my husband sat … Continue reading

Potty Training Already?

This week we went out and bought a potty seat. We tried it out for an hour the first day, which was Friday. Today we weren’t home, so we did not sit on the potty. Tomorrow we’ll be gone again, so we probably won’t sit on the potty. Monday, however, we will be home and that is when I’ll really start teaching him about the potty. I’m not really trying to get him potty trained in a week. He’s only eighteen months old. He has shown some interest, however, and that is why I’m beginning to show him how it … Continue reading

Adventures in Potty Training: Day 2

You know how they always say that you can lead a child to the potty but you can’t make him go? What do you do when you are convinced that your young potty trainee would rather hold it in instead of use the potty? The second day of potty training went relatively smoothly, with more things getting into the potty, less things getting on the floor and no things actually getting on me. I see this last fact as a reason to celebrate and a sign that the training will get easier. Once again we had another dry nap. However, … Continue reading

Does Your Toddler Stall At Bed Time?

Sometimes it can be difficult to discern whether your toddler’s bed time requests for things like a drink or a trip to the potty are legitimate or whether they are attempts to push bed time later into the evening. If the requests are for real, of course you do not want your child to go thirsty and of course you want to support him in the process of learning how to use the potty. On the other hand, if he is stalling, you want to send a clear message that such behavior is not appropriate. If you are anything like … Continue reading

Single-Parent Vacation?

This summer Logan and I desperately needed a vacation. We were planning on going on a little camping trip for a few days, but I wasn’t sure how to pull that off with just the two of us. Would I be able to get the tent up with the not so helpful help of a three year old? What if I couldn’t get a fire started? Would Logan be bored out of his mind just camping with Mom? Needless to say the camping trip didn’t happen. So we decided that we wanted to make the 14 hour drive to Oregon … Continue reading

Fido’s First Scrapbook

My friend just adopted a new puppy. Charger is a Black Lab who has enough energy to power an entire city. Like most feisty pups his age, Charger is running the show at my pal’s home, though the family is loving every minute of the new addition’s introductory phase. The past two weeks have been filled with puppy playing, potty-training and picture-taking. Lots of picture-taking. In fact, my friend estimates that she likely has more photos of Charger as a young pup than she does of her oldest son as a baby. Fortunately, all those shots will be put to … Continue reading

When Should You Get Pregnant?

Many pregnancies are unplanned, but if you have opportunity to decide when you want to have a baby, how do you go about making that decision? How do you know when it is the right time to start a family? Often the first factor that people consider is money. Can you afford to get pregnant? Can you afford diapers, baby clothes, gear, child care and other costs associated with having a baby? The answer is not black and white because the costs of having a baby can vary so much from one family to the next. For example, if one … Continue reading

Constipation Part 2

My wife and I took Lily to see the pediatric surgeon today. Originally, she was scheduled to see him on May 18th, but I had the appointment moved up, because she had become more constipated than normal. In short, the doctor gave us good news and bad news. The bad news is that Lily’s constipation will be a lifelong problem. It will greatly restrict her diet and make potty training more difficult. However, her symptoms can be easily remedied with “an aggressive bowel management program” (his words, not mine). As noted previously, Lily already has a high fiber, high liquid, … Continue reading

Frugal Month in Review: November 2008

November to be is the beginning of two things. The holiday season starts with Thanksgiving, and then there is winter. Despite the fact that winter doesn’t officially start until next month, the fall seems to give way to the winter in November anyway. We had a day of snow already. Here is looking ahead to December and the end of the year! November 1st Frugal Month in Review: October 2008 “Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.” – George Eliot. November 2 … Continue reading
