Have You Heard of the Pacifier Fairy?

A part of me thinks that as parents, we really have way too many make believe creatures. In fact, it exhausts me a little bit. The Easter Bunny, Santa Clause, The Tooth Fairy, etc. all have a part in most everyone’s childhood. But, a small part of me feels bad telling those little lies to my kids. But, then I get over it, and hide those eggs, or fill those stockings. But, I heard of a new fairy a while back while talking to another mama friend. The pacifier fairy. She told me that is how she finally got her … Continue reading

What is YOUR 4 Month Old Up To?

I love every stage in my baby’s life. There are precious moments in each one, but I am particularly loving my sweet little four month old right now. No, he is not sleeping through the night yet, and no, his tummy troubles have not been fixed, but he sure is sweet, and I am loving watching him grow and develop. It seems that for me, when my kids hit 4 months old, I start to really enjoy all the sweetness that comes with being a Mom. My little guy is smiling at me all the time. One lady said, “Oh, … Continue reading

Could Too Much Milk Cause Colic-Like Symptoms In Your Baby?-Part I

Although I am now breastfeeding my third child, I am just now looking into oversupply, and overactive letdown as reasons for why my baby is so fussy. I have always known that I had no problem producing enough milk for my babies. My first two kids were nice, chubby babies, and I have never been able to relate to women that don’t have enough. Although, I am fully aware that this is a real problem for many Moms. But, did you know that too much milk can also be a serious problem too? I didn’t, until recently, and honestly, it … Continue reading

Milk Problems

I breastfeed. I’ve breastfed all three of my children and I love it. Not only is it the best food for baby, but it gives me downtime with my little ones that is strictly between them and me. No one can substitute for me, no one can take my place. It’s a bonding experience that I couldn’t imagine not having with my babies. But about four weeks ago, I had a really nasty cold. I took some anti-histamines. The next day I found out that it really wasn’t a cold, it was the flu. A flu that was accompanied by … Continue reading

Panic Attack

My baby is dehydrated. Every single morning, since the day she was born, she has soaked her overnight diapers. Literally drenched them. Not usually enough to get her clothes wet, but sometimes. If they were cloth diapers, I could smell the ammonia aroma from a mile away. If they were disposable, the things weighed about 10 pounds. It made sense. During the day, I changed her diaper every two hours or so. All she consumed in the way of “food” was breast milk. She was a healthy, growing, well-hydrated little pumpkin. Of course her diapers were going to be full … Continue reading

Giving Newborns Cow’s Milk?

Everyone knows how good breastfeeding can be for a baby. The many benefits may include protecting the child from illness and infection, from allergies, and it may enhance a baby’s development as well as intelligence. We have been taught to avoid cow’s milk until the baby reaches 12 months. Some of the reasons given by experts are the fact that the baby can’t digest the milk proteins and that milk doesn’t have all the vitamins and minerals needed for growth and development. But, a study led by Professor Yitzhak Katz of the Department of Pediatrics at Tel Aviv University says … Continue reading

Poop Schedule

As a newborn, my daughter pooped every single time she breastfed. I could count on hearing and feeling a low rumble in her diaper in the middle of every feeding, and she rarely pooped in between feedings. Her pooping happened less often the older she got, even though she was still exclusively breastfed. It was after we introduced solids that her poop schedule became interesting. She never had a problem with diarrhea or constipation, thank goodness. We purposely avoided things like juice and rice cereal to steer clear of those problems. The changes that occurred in her poop had more … Continue reading

She Thinks Her Poop DOES Stink

Back in the pre-solid-food days in my household, poopy diapers were something my husband and I had to check for. If our baby was fussy, we peeked in the side of the leg gussets to check for yellow. If it had been a couple hours since the last diaper change, we peered down the back of the diaper to check for any mess. Sometimes she had poop in her diaper for quite awhile before anyone realized the need for a change. I miss the days when we weren’t sure if a diaper was poopy until we saw the poop with … Continue reading

Nursing Necklaces: A Solution for the Distracted Nurser

When my daughter was a newborn, breastfeeding was pretty relaxing. Once she latched on, she’d eat for about 20 minutes straight without ever coming up for air. I could count on relaxing during these times, and often caught a few ZZZ’s while she filled up her little belly. The older my daughter got, the less relaxing nursing sessions became. I still cherish our special breastfeeding moments together, but I’m definitely not getting any power naps in while she dines. Where she used to be blissfully unaware of the world around her, my baby girl is now as nosy as they … Continue reading

Oatmeal: A Simple Way To Increase Milk Supply

At a recent meeting with a group of young, breastfeeding mothers, I learned that oatmeal is supposed to boost milk supply. While it is not scientifically proven, many mothers report an increase in milk production after eating oatmeal, or products containing oatmeal. I’ve never had a problem with too little milk; in fact, the only “problem” I’ve had is too much milk. I’ve always counted myself lucky that supply was never an issue, because I have a strong desire to breastfeed well past my daughter’s first birthday. Although I’ve never had a problem with too little milk, I want to … Continue reading
