Baby Melinda, California’s Smallest Preemie, Goes Home

Melinda Star Guido, the smallest preemie to have been born in California, has left the hospital. She holds the title of being the third smallest preemie in the entire world. After a long time spent in the NICU, she was finally able to go home with her parents. When Melinda was born, she weighed less than a can of soda. She was born 24 weeks premature, because there was a problem with the placenta. Due to that problem, she wasn’t able to get the nutrition, blood, and oxygen she needed while she was in the womb. In addition to this … Continue reading

A Baby Does Change Your Life

I think some people have the attitude when they are getting pregnant, that a baby doesn’t have to change your life. I think this is funny now that I am a Mom with two kids. But, I’m sure I was a little naive too. I remember right before my first was born, and there was only about a week until my due date and I had a little break down. I remember crying and crying to my husband that it was never going to be “just us” again. I hear people say things like, “A baby doesn’t have to change … Continue reading

When Mommy Goes Potty, Does Baby Go Too?

I’ve decided that, if any mother claims she has never brought her baby to the bathroom with her when she pees, she’s lying. Obviously it’s not something we go around proclaiming. “My baby sits on my lap while I pee!” or, “When I’m going number 2, my son continues to sleep in the front pack. He doesn’t even seem to notice the smell. ” Still, I’m pretty confident every mother has done it at least once. During the newborn stage, especially if your baby is in some type of carrier or sling, it’s simply easier to keep them bundled in … Continue reading

Surviving Your Last Weeks of Pregnancy: Sleeping Arrangements

You only have a few weeks to go until your baby arrives, and if you’re like I was, you’ve probably got six loads of baby laundry going through the wash for the second time, a list of 25 things for your husband to clean and organize, a wet mop in one hand, and a feather duster in the other. That’s in addition to the vacuuming, scrubbing, and organizing you did last night until 3am, right? Unfortunately, all that hard work and preparation commonly referred to as “nesting” is robbing you of precious sleep. Nothing is more important right now than … Continue reading

Are You Causing Your Toddler’s Sleep Problems?

Yesterday I wrote about three bad habits you should avoid from the beginning if you want to help your baby establish healthy sleep patterns. Interestingly, I ran across research today that showed a link between parenting style and sleeping problems that last into toddlerhood, past the 12 month mark. Defining Healthy Sleep Despite what all the mothers in your mom’s group say (and despite what you may feel) “sleeping through the night” is medically defined as 5 hours. While that is certainly not enough sleep for most adults, it’s important to understand that when we’re looking for healthy sleep habits, … Continue reading

Is Swaddling Overrated?

Parents of colicky babies everywhere are encouraged to shush, swish and swaddle. The three S’s are the only thing that seem to bring some babies comfort and relief. I however, was not blessed with any of those babies. While all of my children were content in their slings and mei tais, not a single one was interested in becoming a cute little human burrito. I thought I was doing it wrong, but even the nurses who were supposed experts couldn’t get my babies to like having their body parts all mushed up close to their bodies. What can I say? … Continue reading

Why Use a Baby Hammock?

For our first baby we had a crib. We got a crib (actually one was purchased for us) because that’s what every one else had. That’s what we were supposed to get. So there we were, exhausted but politically correct in the baby sleeping department. That is until we couldn’t take the sleep deprivation and wisened up to the benefits of co-sleeping. We’ve never gone back to having a crib or bassinet or anything of the like. Even the twins co-slept with us until they got to big. There is after all a space limit to how many people can … Continue reading

Baby Blog Week in Review: July 23 to July 30

We had a busy week in the baby blog this past week. From sleeping to baby research to the newest baby products, we covered it here. Here is the breakdown of what we covered: July 26 Babies Aren’t Supposed to Sleep So often I find that new parents are reading this book or that method to try and ‘train’ their infant to sleep better. However, the more I parent, the more I really believe that your baby’s sleep patterns are a big part of his temperament rather than something you did or didn’t do. Baby Bling? Seriously? I was shocked … Continue reading

4 Tricks for Getting More Sleep at Night

In my last article, I wrote about how really, sleep is a function of temperament and you get what you get as far as newborns go. Some newborns wake every hour and others sleep through the night early on. “Sleep training” a newborn is never a good idea. However, there are things you can do to minimize the waking at night and help your baby work with his own biological clock. Maintain a consistent bedtime and waking time. Even in the early days of having baby home with you, have a set bedtime. Every night, at the same time, put … Continue reading
