Parents and Bizarre Baby Names

If you read my recent rant regarding celebrities and their bizarre baby naming rituals, then you might not be surprised to hear that the trend appears to be growing among common folk. Case in point: Some Swedish parents are currently fighting the government for the “privilege” of naming their child after the 17th letter of the alphabet. No kidding! The stalwart parents want Swedish officials to amend a law created in 1982, so that they can keep calling their kid “Q.” Apparently, the eclectic mom and dad have been calling their son Q since he was born. However, Swedish law … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: The Naming of Cats

The first musical I ever saw on Broadway was Cats — I used to listen to the soundtrack (on vinyl) over and over. There’s a song about the naming of cats that I still can remember the lyrics for: The naming of cats is a difficult matter It isn’t just one of those holiday games… You may think at first I’m as mad as a hatter When I tell you a cat must have three different names. The song goes on to say WHY a cat has three different names, including the secret name that they only tell to other … Continue reading

Have you picked out a name for your baby yet? Chances are that you have, if you are nearing your due date, but perhaps you just found out you are pregnant. It may seem a long way off until baby is here, or maybe it doesn’t and you are already frantically searching baby books. Either way, naming a person can be daunting as well as exciting. Some people have names already picked before conception, and for those people it is easy. I used to be one of those people. My first child was named before even being conceived. The child … Continue reading

Identifying Baby

We go through an agonizing amount of time deciding on what to name baby. Do we name them after someone in the family? Do we blend names? A grandmother’s name with another’s middle name? Do we name the son after the father or follow the family tradition and attach a junior or a third to their name? Do name the daughter after the mother and give her an affectionate nickname to separate the two? However we decide to name our children, once we have given them their name – we will often use pet names for them as they are … Continue reading

Would You Give Them the Same Name Now?

The other day, I was chatting with a couple of my kids and we started talking about names. As I am studying up and getting ready to add a dog to our family, we started to banter around possible names. This conversation evolved and led into a conversation about the names I had chosen for my kids. One of my daughters asked me “If you could name me all over again, would you give me the same name?” I thought this was a great question! While I do think that my kids’ names suit them, maybe there are better, more … Continue reading

Don’t You Just Love Little “Love Him”?

Whenever I hear a story like this one I always think of the episode of Friends where Pheobe discovers that the laws in the United States allow for one to legally change one’s name to virtually anything. So Phoebe decides that she is going to rename herself Princess Consuela Bananahammock. Because hey–why not? Apparently a whole host of my generation has seen Friends and identifies with the self confident Pheobe who has no reservations about going through life seriously, as Princess Consuela Bananahammock. Oh but wait. . .Phoebe is a fictional character, but I think that someone forgot to tell … Continue reading

What Should I Name my Child?

What should I name my baby? Whatever you want. Yes that seems like a simple question and deserves a simple answer, but it can get more involved than that when you are a single parent. Lacih8607 asked whether or not she should give her child it’s father’s last name. For some single moms this can be a very confusing, and stressful event. In my case, I knew that my son’s father was not going to be involved in his life. I knew he didn’t care what his son’s name was going to be, or even if he got a name … Continue reading

The Names of God–An Introduction

Like most parents we took great care in naming our children. We picked names that were meaningful and had stories to tell. Elizabeth Helen, my oldest is named after my grandmother. Her name means “a light consecrated to God.” Interestingly, she has already declared her desire to be a missionary and is active in our evangelistic outreaches within our neighborhood. For each of my kids there is a story to their name; something that has meaning for my husband and I and that will have meaning for them when they’re old enough to understand it. Likewise throughout the Bible names … Continue reading
