My Experience With Child-Led Weaning – The Conclusion

Last month I shared my experience with child-led weaning. A month ago, we were down to one feeding each morning, and that continued for a while. This past week, my son dropped the morning feeding. He simply woke up and said “eat,” pointing downstairs (where his high chair is), and was happy to have his rice milk, banana and cereal. For a few days he asked to nurse in the afternoon. Then, one day, he didn’t ask at all. He didn’t ask the next day either… or the next. On the third day I realized he probably wasn’t going to … Continue reading

My Experience With Child-Led Weaning

So you’re committed to breastfeeding your little one, but you’re still in the throes of full-time breastfeeding and wondering if you’ll ever get your body back. Perhaps you have decided to let your baby self-wean, but you are not sure how it is going to play out in everyday life. Part of you is afraid your baby will never give up her “nanas” (or whatever your little one calls them). That’s one of the main reasons many moms decide to wean at a certain age. Not having a concrete end in sight is hard for some moms. For others, weaning … Continue reading

Nursing Until 1 Year, and beyond

I wrote an article recently called, The Truth About Nursing. It can shed some light on what nursing is like in those first few months. It seems that these days, people who nurse past 6 months are very rare. I find that more and more of my friends are saying to me, “Wow! I can’t believe you breastfed that long!” and other things like that. I do feel lucky that I was able to nurse both of my children until they were 14 months old. Here is another fact that I realized the other day about my own nursing experience. … Continue reading

Can Breastfeeding Reduce Teen Pregnancy?

According to a new report, women who were breastfed as babies tend to get pregnant later in life compared to those who were bottle-fed as infants. If that’s true then my daughter shouldn’t expect to get pregnant until she’s in her forties. That kid nursed 24/7 for the first 18 months of her life. Give or take a few months. By my calculations that means she won’t be procreating until she’s well past her teenage years. Then again, perhaps, I am reading too much into this new study. The published report in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B shows … Continue reading

“Momnesia” Is Not Just in Your Head

When my first daughter was born, I wrote a check for fourteen hundred dollars. The problem was that the amount due was fourteen dollars. The company very kindly called me, and to my embarrassment I found myself saying, “I’m sorry, I just had a baby.” While I’m sure I made the office bulletin board of loopy customers, it turns out that there’s something to this loopyness that we moms get after we have babies. Personally, I’ve always blamed the sleep deprivation. I am one of those people that needs at least a solid nine hours of sleep per night. I … Continue reading

What Have You Been Doing Online?

I was messing around on-line tonight, and an annoying pop up came on the screen. It asked if I wanted to scan my computer for records of any adult sites that my computer has visited. I didn’t want to be bothered, and I know I haven’t been to any adult websites, so I went to close the pop-up with the red square in the top right corner. That always works. However, instead of closing the pop-up, it took me to the home page of the company that wanted to sell me their adult filter software. The page said that their … Continue reading

Great Breastfeeding Books

If you are planning to breastfeed your new baby, you’ll want to spend some time learning about it during your pregnancy. There are dozens of books in print for breastfeeding mothers. When you browse the bookshelf or search the internet, you may be overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices. In this blog, I will review a few of my favorites. The Breastfeeding Book: Everything You Need to Know About Nursing Your Child from Birth Through Weaning By Martha Sears and William Sears, M.D. This is my personal favorite and I’ve read many breastfeeding books. Bill and Martha Sears are … Continue reading

5 Reasons Why You Might Breastfeed a Toddler and an Infant

I remember when I was still nursing my oldest daughter while I was very pregnant with my son, someone asked me what I was going to do after the baby was born and they both wanted to nurse. This simply was a non-issue for me. I would nurse both. I have now talked to many mothers who do the same thing (although it is not, in my opinion a very common practice). Here is a list of reasons why you might consider nursing through a pregnancy and then tandem nursing both the toddler and the baby. 1. Child led weaning. … Continue reading
