Infant Product Recall: Gas Relief Drops

baby crying Here is another recall, this time for infant gas relief drops. Johnson & Johnson is recalling one-once bottles of infants Mylicon gas relief drops in the non-staining version. There is a possibility that these drops might contain metal fragments that could have gotten into the product sometime during the manufacturing process.

The recall includes more than 12,000 bottles of these infant gas relief drops. If you have these drops, stop using them immediately and call the manufacturer at 1-800-222-9435. They will tell you the details of the recall, including how to dispose of the infant gas relief drops and how to request a refund or a replacement.

There haven't been any reports of infants being harmed by this product, as far as I have seen, but it is always good to listen to a recall.

The recall brings up an interesting discussion about whether or not these types of drops are effective at all. Personally, I never used gas relief drops with any of my children. It isn't that they never had gas, but that I am of the mindset to use as few medicines as possible during infancy, and I never heard that these drops were especially useful.

To relieve gas in infants, I always used the tried and true method that doesn't require medication. I would heat up a microwave heating pad to WARM only (for about one-third of the normal time that is recommended), making sure that there were no hot spots on the pad. I would then place the pad on my lap and place the baby stomach down on the pad, patting his or her back gently to help relieve the gas. Having the pad on me, as opposed to on some other surface accomplished two things. First, I could instantly feel how warm the pad was to avoid it getting too hot, and the baby would be comforted by being on me.
