High Chair Safety

High chair accidents occur more frequently than you might think they do. Maybe parents are pretty vigilant about high chair safety when their baby is just starting to use one, but after months (or several children), the safety rules tend to slip. Here is a guide (or a quick reminder) about high chair safety. Use a high chair that follows current safety standards While that antique wooden high chair you saw in a shop or were given by grandma looks lovely, save it as an accent piece in your home to display dolls, plants, old lace, etc. We know a … Continue reading

Hotel Furnishings Go High-Tech

By now I’m sure you are familiar with Westin’s signature Heavenly Bed. The pillow top-mattress bed, introduced almost a decade ago, became an instant hit and is credited with starting a revolution in hotel bedding. (You can now buy your own Heavenly Bed at Nordstrom stores.) The mega-popular bed set off a hotel furnishing war of sorts and Wyndham Hotels fired back with a “Smart Chair” aimed to do for comfortable multi-tasking what the Heavenly Bed did for sleeping. For those of you who don’t frequent Wyndham Hotels the “Smart Chair” is a high-tech furnishing that has integrated pivoting tables, … Continue reading

If you missed something, check it out now! Sunday, Feb. 3 Should Medical Exemptions be Justified By Religious Beliefs? We tackled the story of a couple who did not want their daughter’s blood drawn within the state mandated period of 48 hours after birth. There is no easy answer here, but … Continue reading

A Lesson in Product Safety Recalls

Graco, a popular baby brand that sells “big ticket” items like strollers and cribs, recently recalled 100,000 high chairs. The problem is that the high chairs can collapse if they are not fully opened and locked from the storage position. They received 18 complaints of the chair collapsing and one child suffered a minor injury due to being in the chair while it collapsed. On reading this story, I got curious as to how one finds out that something you’ve bought has been recalled. I know there are lists that you can look at. Perhaps someone with an overly developed … Continue reading

Baby Safety Seminar? Part II

See also: Baby Safety Seminar? Part I So far readers, you have learned that my husband and I were sent a postcard inviting us to a baby safety seminar and that we chose to RSVP and attend. The man conducting the seminar, who we call Mr. Bob, told us about all kinds of horrible accidents that can happen to a child in the “wrong” kind of crib. In the meantime, he pushed the notion that the crib he was selling was safer and more convenient than other cribs. Let’s find out what happened next. Apparently a crib is not the … Continue reading

Baby Safety Seminar? Part I

When I was pregnant I registered at Babies-R-Us as many new mommies do. Of course within the next couple of weeks I began receiving postcards and welcome packages from formula and toy companies. I loved all of the coupons and free samples of baby formula. Then, one day I received a postcard advertising a baby safety seminar. The postcard had a phone number to RSVP to and a listing of the topics that would be discussed at the seminar. My husband and I decided it would be beneficial to go because we thought we might learn about car seat safety, … Continue reading

When A Bargain Is Not A Bargain

I love getting a bargain. My house is mostly decorated in early yard sale, late thrift store. I’m seldom opposed to buying or receiving something used. I like the character that comes with an older table or dresser. Chairs that are a different style and can be painted to fit in with my eclectic decorating style are always a favorite. As are little odds and ends that you can’t find anywhere else. No matter how much I love a bargain there are some things I will not buy used, it’s not worth the risk. When it comes to children’s safety, … Continue reading

Better Safe Than Sorry

With the economy still in the dumpster and job loss at a record high, it’s no surprise that parents across the country are doing whatever they can to pinch pennies. In addition to cutting back on family vacations, dining out and throwing mega-parties for their kids, a new survey found that an increasing number of moms and dads are shopping at consignment stores or accepting hand-me-down items from church groups, neighbors and friends. Recycling gently used children’s gear is a great way to save money; however, experts warn that not all hand-me-downs are safe, and they are warning parents to … Continue reading

Vacation Reminders

Summer is winding down and for many families that means taking one last getaway before the chaos of a new school year starts. Whether you are planning a road trip to the beach or you’re jetting off to a major theme park, you’ll want to cover all your bases. Fisher-Price Recall Angers Parents

It’s the talk of Twitter: Toy giant Fisher-Price is recalling more than 10 million trikes, toys and high chairs due to safety concerns. It’s not too often that I have to worry about mass recalls, but my daughter actually owns one of the toddler trikes that Fisher-Price is recalling. According to news reports, seven million Fisher-Price Trikes and Tough Trikes toddler tricycles are being recalled because kids have sustained injuries from them. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says it is aware of 10 reports of children being hurt on the plastic riding toys. Six of them required medical attention. The … Continue reading
