How to Teach Your Baby Table Manners

I think sometimes we forget that table manners are learned behavior. We’ve been eating our spaghetti with a fork for so long that when we’re confronted with the task of teaching our babies how to eat, it’s a little overwhelming. Sometimes it’s just easier to spoon feed them or limit them to “neat” foods. They’ll never learn, though, unless they practice on their own. Bring out the bibs, the miniature forks, and the spaghetti; it’s time to learn table manners! First of all, have a list of goals or milestones in mind and work towards just one at a time. … Continue reading

The Baby Food Diet?

Have you heard of the baby food diet? I was reading about it this afternoon and one writer’s experience with testing it out for one week. He lost 6 pounds eating just baby food and one adult-size meal per day. I think you’d have to be pretty desperate to lose weight to try this diet. I have had my fair share of baby food and I can’t imagine eating so blandly for a week. I always made a point to taste test everything before giving it to my son when he was eating purees. I didn’t want to give him … Continue reading

Mother’s Day Extended

My wife looked forward to Mother’s Day this year. Last year our son was largely a mystery to us but she felt his presence through kicks and viewed it through the necessity for a different type of clothing (maternity). This year our son is crawling, sprawling, crying, laughing, talking and playing. Mother’s Day was sure to be a joyous occasion. My son even helped me pick out flowers to be delivered to Mom on the special day. While there was much to be happy about, Mother’s Day extended long past Sunday this year. It all started Saturday night. My son … Continue reading

Two Tricks for Feeding Solids to Twins

This is not really a blog on the what, and when of starting solid foods. I’ve written several articles on starting solids with babies and I’ve linked them below. That aspect of starting solids is no different than starting with a singleton. However, when you have twins, you quickly learn that you need an extra set of hands that are frequently not available. You need one hand to feed one infant, another hand to feed the other, and a third hand to wipe up the ensuing messes. Since I have yet to meet a three handed woman, I thought I’d … Continue reading

Does Your Baby Have a Food Allergy?

I am writing this in part because I’ve heard countless mothers say that their baby is allergic to their breast milk because the baby is spitting up and in part because I think many people fail to understand food allergies and babies and how the whole ‘solid foods’ thing works in general. So consider this a primer on recognizing food intolerances in your baby. Breast Milk and Allergies It is virtually impossible to be allergic to breast milk. Some babies are sensitive to things that mom eats–the most common culprit being cow’s milk protein. However, actually physically being allergic to … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: What Solids Should I Avoid?

Question: My baby seems to have a sensitive stomach. He seems to react to foods that even I eat. He is 4 months old and I want to start him on solids soon but I’m not sure which solid foods will make him constipated or irritate his stomach. Any advice? I think that as parents we spend most of our time with our babies feeding them. I can think of nothing else that takes up as much time as does feeding. Consequently we also spend the most time worrying and wondering about the how, what, when, etc. of starting solid … Continue reading

Help! My Baby Hates Solid Foods!

I have written before about how we got into breastfeeding forever and ever and ever. Our oldest daughter didn’t take solids. It’s not that she spit them out and it dribbled down her chins. (She was after all, a very, very chubby baby!) That is what most babies do. They make faces, unsure of what to do with the taste or texture. The food kind of unceremoniously falls out of the mouth and onto whatever baby is wearing. Not Lizzy. Texture (or taste, or smell, or the way it looks) made her gag and generally what comes after gagging is … Continue reading
