Halloween Costume Tips

When fall comes, it is time to start thinking about those costumes. Maybe you just want a costume for photos at the pumpkin patch, to attend a party or to introduce your little one to trick or treating. Babies, toddlers and preschoolers can look so cute all dressed up. Here is some advice and ideas for easy Halloween costumes for babies.

If you are buying your costume, and your baby cooperates, try it on in the store over your baby's clothing. Sizes in costumes can vary widely. The Disney Store costumes tend to run big, for example, and you may find that one just swallows up your baby.

Avoid hooded costumes. Yes, they are cute, but I haven't met a baby yet that wasn't miserable in one. You also have another thing to worry about with fitting the size. Instead, opt for a decorated hat or go without.

Avoid any heavy or complicated costumes. You want simple, easy access for diaper changes, and you don't want you little one to overheat or become exhausted with the effort of moving her limbs.

Although there are plenty of little devils, serial killers and witches out there, I tend to avoid the scary costumes for babies. The juxtaposition might be seen as cute by some, but I like to go for adorable. If you want something quirky, how about making a "little stinker" costume complete with a shirt declaring it and a bunch or plastic onions attached?

A quick last minute costume is that of a bunch of leaves. You'll need a small wagon, a sleeper or sweat suit in a neutral or fall color and real or fake leaves (fake leaves will let you use the costume again). You can also add a hat. Glue the leaves on the outfit (without your baby wearing it of course), using fabric glue or a hot glue gun. Place your child in the wagon, add some more leaves on top, and you are ready to go!
