Should Both Parents Tend to the Baby at Night?

Whose job is it to get up in the middle of the night to tend to a crying infant? There was a time when the automatic assumption was that this task was entirely for the mother. Today, there are plenty of parents who realize that there are good reasons to share this responsibility. Babies are incredibly cute. They can also be exhausting. Many babies simply refuse to sleep through the night. They loudly let their parents know that they need a diaper change or want to be fed. At least one parent needs to get up to tend to the … Continue reading

Medical Residents Need More Sleep!

I work at a health science center and deal directly with medical residents.  I update web pages for them and when I meet with them face-to-face, they are usually bright and alert.  But, it may not be the case of the majority of residents. I know from updating some of our web pages that there are rules in place to make sure residents get enough time off to rest.  I mean, they are only human, right?  Well, some seem to be superhuman, or at least think they are and that may be a problem. In 2003, the Accreditation Council for … Continue reading

Baby Center’s 15 Best Baby Products of 2012

If you are in the process of planning your baby registry, you may want to take note that BabyCenter has released its list of the top fifteen baby products of 2012, as chosen by moms. Who better to offer real life feedback on what works (and doesn’t work) for babies and their parents, and, perhaps more importantly, why. Since parenting is such an individual thing, it only makes sense that there are many products out there to address the needs of different parents with different lifestyles. Of course, it makes it a little harder to pinpoint which products will work … Continue reading

It Will Get Better

With every first time Mom it begins the same. Sleep deprivation. Is the baby eating enough? What was I thinking? Will I ever have a life again? I’m doing everything wrong! Those feelings are natural. Remember not to focus on the mommy guilt. My youngest sister just had her first baby. I’ve been so worried about her because even though my first baby is now 6 years old, the memories of those early days are still etched into my brain. It was not an easy time. Venturing into motherhood is an experience that sometimes is not so easy. But I … Continue reading

What Are Your Baby’s Favorites?

They say that every baby is born with a unique and distinct personality. After having 3 babies myself, I can definitely say that is true. One of the fun things about this stage that my baby is in is that we see more of his personality a little bit each day. I love it. Along with a personality comes a baby’s likes and dislikes, and believe it or not, babies even have “favorites” at this stage. Of course, as baby grows, his favorite things will grow and change too. But, sometimes, they will stay the same. What is your baby’s … Continue reading

Getting Enough Rest

When you are pregnant, it is important that you get plenty of sleep. After all, your body is working hard day and night to grow your baby, in addition to performing the other activities that you do every day. In a perfect world, once you became pregnant your schedule and list of obligations would adjust accordingly, providing you with plenty of time to sleep as much as you felt like sleeping. Unfortunately, that is not the case, but there are a few things that you can do to ensure that you get the rest that you need while you are … Continue reading

Help Falling Asleep

As I was helping my son fall asleep, I was thinking about the potential problems that I am created by actually helping him fall asleep. So many of the other moms of young boys that I know do no such thing as laying down in their son’s bed to help him fall asleep (I must be crazy). A small part of me wishes that I could get my son to just go to sleep on his own without being scared. Perhaps this is a behavior that I can teach my two year old, but as I lay next to my … Continue reading

When Baby Won’t Take A Bottle

My latest frustration in dealing with my little guy’s tummy troubles has been since we have tried to introduce a bottle. I never thought a four-month-old could be so stubborn. But, my little guy is. He wants nothing to do with a bottle. There was one occasion where I went out and my husband fed him breastmilk with a bottle. He took it right away, and had no problems. But, now, we are trying to supplement with formula due to the fact that we can’t seem to figure out what it is that I’m eating that is causing his tummy … Continue reading

Your Baby Wants You!

There is always a recurring theme in my blogging it seems. I am a Mom. And, I often feel inadequate. Today has been one of those days. I woke up super grouchy due to my baby waking me at 4:15 am, the toddler waking me at 5:45 am, and my “big girl” waking me up at 6:45 am. Needless to say, I was not happy with anyone. I managed to get my girl out the door to Kindergarten and gave her a big hug before she left and told her I loved her. I hope she remembers that instead of … Continue reading

What is YOUR 4 Month Old Up To?

I love every stage in my baby’s life. There are precious moments in each one, but I am particularly loving my sweet little four month old right now. No, he is not sleeping through the night yet, and no, his tummy troubles have not been fixed, but he sure is sweet, and I am loving watching him grow and develop. It seems that for me, when my kids hit 4 months old, I start to really enjoy all the sweetness that comes with being a Mom. My little guy is smiling at me all the time. One lady said, “Oh, … Continue reading
