Preserving Summer Memories

Now that summer has officially arrived, there’s no time like the present to preserve all those seasonal memories. Whether it’s a cross-country trip to grandma’s house, experiencing the thrills and chills of a world-famous theme park or having fun in the sun at the beach, don’t forget to pack your camera so that you can document every fun-filled moment. While you are organizing your pictures think of ways to pair them with appropriate embellishments that will make your … Continue reading

Taking Your Camera to the Beach… and Using It

Summer is here… a time when millions of families head to the sun, sand, and surf. And along with the sunscreen, water and towels most will tote along their cameras to capture the sun-filled memories of children splashing in waves or building monster sand castles. Only not every shutterbug readily whips out his or her camera in the heat of the moment for fear that the elements (water, sand, etc.) will damage their expensive digital devices. Meanwhile, others simply forget that their cameras are sitting in their beach bags waiting to be used. As you head out on your family … Continue reading

Family Project: Your Child’s Year In the Life

This year I’m diving into a new project at my daughter’s behest because it’s her first year in school as a kindergartener. The project requires the help of everyone in the family from both her grandmothers to her cousin to us as her parents. So what does this project entail? Let me give you a small description – for the scrapbookers out there, you’ll definitely understand what I’m talking about – but the idea is not to build a scrapbook so much as to let our daughter do it with the input and help of those around her. As a … Continue reading

Footprints in our Memories

You know, when my daughter was born, I was surprised that not only did they not take a footprint or handprint of her – they didn’t even issue her a birth certificate. In fact, a lot of hospitals don’t anymore – they give you a letter of registration. It basically informs people that you had a child and some key data about the child. If you want a birth certificate, you have to send off for it. I was more than a little startled about that, but I did end up getting her birth certificate and it’s nothing really fancy … Continue reading

Beach Theme Background Paper

With much of the nation baking under record high temperatures, it’s no surprise that area beaches are packed to the gills. After all, who doesn’t enjoy soaking up the sun, sand and surf? Whether you are visiting the sea solo, or you are there with your entire clan, a trip to the beach is a memorable occasion. In fact, beach-themed layouts are extremely popular with summer scrapbooking fans who want to preserve the season’s highlights. Photos of family members burying each other in the sand, surfing, frolicking in white wash, collecting shells or watching the sunset make great additions to … Continue reading

Down by the Sea

Don’t let a summer trip to the beach go to waste. While your family is having fun in the sun, be sure to snap photos of their adventures in the sand and surf. Pictures of your kids chasing seagulls, collecting seashells, swimming, surfing, sunbathing, flying a kite or reading under a colorful beach umbrella are the heart and soul of a beach vacation-themed scrapbook. In addition to snapping images of your trip, consider jotting down some of the funniest or most poignant memories to feature in journaling blocks. If you don’t have the time or energy to write down anecdotes … Continue reading

Spring Break Scrapbooks

Spring doesn’t officially begin until March 20th, but many families have already hit the road to escape Old Man Winter’s wrath and enjoy sun and fun in warmer climates. My nephew’s school spring break wrapped up last week. He spent five glorious days surfing, sculpting sand ramps for his Hot Wheels’ cars and snacking on his favorite sandwiches at a popular Hawaiian hot spot. My sister-in-law is now busy crafting a Spring Break 2011 scrapbook to showcase the photos she snapped during their family getaway. Spring break scrapbooks are a cinch to make, especially if you visit the beach during … Continue reading

Recording Genealogy Research in Books

When I first realized the importance of genealogical research, I wanted a book in which to record my research data and notes. I started with a three-ring binder and page protectors. I put everything that I had pertaining to my family tree in the binder. I had articles on how to build a family tree that I had clipped from magazines. I put those together in sleeves and added a tab divider to keep them organized. Next, I added handwritten notes that were given to me by my grandparents. The notes contained names and dates of some of our ancestors, … Continue reading

Grandparents & Baby

Reverend Crutchfield commented on Daddy Time about the grandfather time that he enjoys with his grandchild and he made a great point. Grandparents are vital in your baby’s development and what’s more – the enjoyment is shared equally on both sides of the fence. When our daughter was a baby, we lived in Virginia – thousands of miles from grandparents on all sides of the family. My hat is off to the three grandmothers that made their pilgrimages out to visit us so regularly that our daughter knew them all on sight and even developed special pet names for them. … Continue reading
