Breastfeeding is a Personal Choice

As a mother who has nursed three babies and edits an attachment parenting site, I am a big supporter of breastfeeding. But one thing I’ve noticed is that some people are crazy about it. There are a lot of breastfeeding moms and supporters out there that get kind of nasty to moms that don’t breastfeed. My personal experience was when my oldest quit nursing at seven months old. She just quit. No notice, no warning. Just one day she woke up and wanted nothing to do with my breast. Come to find out I was pregnant, but she didn’t care, … Continue reading

Fired for Breastfeeding?

Imagine this: you work at a restaurant and during your break you head outside. Dad brings your newborn baby to the restaurant and you breastfeed your infant in the car. When your boss finds out, he tells you that you cannot breastfeed during your breaks. You explain that you need to work and you can’t afford to stay on leave until you are done nursing. Unfortunately, your boss is not willing to compromise and you’re fired. Sounds outrageous, right? That’s exactly what happened to Marina Chavez in Los Angeles. Fortunately for Marina, the Fair Employment and Housing Commission ruled that … Continue reading

Not So Smart Business

Tim Horton’s Coffee Shop Fires Single Mom for Giving Out a $.16 Doughnut–to a Toddler Yep, apparently her manager wanted to make an example of what not to do. Don’t be generous to customers’ children thereby encouraging them to come back but instead, tell the little tike that he doesn’t deserve a doughnut. Apparently a worker saw the toddler reaching for the doughnut from across the counter and just gave him one. Shame, shame–she didn’t pay for it and her manager fired her for stealing. Once the story broke the company offered her the job back (which she accepted) and … Continue reading

Talk about a disgruntled worker. Be happy you weren’t on this flight: A Compass Airlines jet carrying 72 passengers and four crewmembers was forced to make an emergency landing in Fargo, North Dakota last week when an angry flight attendant deliberately set a fire in the plane’s restroom. Luckily no injuries were reported, but those on board the flight said the incident led to some very frightening moments. According to news reports, Eder Rojas, a 19-year-old flight attendant with Compass, was allegedly upset about his work schedule so he decided to set the plane on fire. But he only partially … Continue reading

More Great Careers: Fundraiser to Government Manager

This is the blog to watch if you’re looking to change careers or are just starting to consider what your career options will be. The best careers are chosen based a variety of factors including prestige, pay, and job security. Fundraiser Personally, this is my nightmare job. But many people enjoy being a development director. Most of what a development director does is developing relationships with donors and ensuring that their donors have a ‘vested interest’ in the organization for which they work. Development directors also need to develop campaigns, host events and “sell” the organization’s mission and vision to … Continue reading

Water Danger: Know the Risks

Water intoxication? I didn’t know there was such a thing and that it could be deadly. Water intoxication is also known as hyperhydration. Jennifer Strange died, recently, because of it. Just drinking water, moderately, doesn’t harm you. However, if you consume large quantities and hold your urine, that’s another story. It can result in hyponatremia, a condition related to water intoxication. Taking in more water than your body can release causes an imbalance of electrolytes. The imbalance occurs when the sodium level in the blood drops significantly (below 135 mmol/L). This eventually leads to swelling in the brain. A person … Continue reading
