FDA Warns Against Using Nipple Creamby Valorie Delp | More from this Blogger 25 May 2008 06:50 AM
The FDA Warning The ingredients named as problematic in the cream are chlorphenesin, phenoxyethanol. According to the FDA, the interaction between these ingredients is also troublesome and can exacerbate symptoms. The FDA is saying that moms should stop using this cream and consult a doctor immediately if your infant shows any symptoms. Baby's Bliss Upon receiving the FDA results, Baby's Bliss has voluntarily stopped selling and marketing the product. However, they are not pleased with the FDA results. According to Baby's Bliss: *The FDA took over 6 months to give them the results of their research. *The chemicals in question are present in the product in minute amounts relative to what is considered safe for adults. *The product has been out for over a year and they have not received on single complaint on the product. In fact, claims Baby's Bliss, they've only received positive feedback on the product. FDA Conclusion Personally, after reading all the information I find that the FDA results were probably preemptive. The chemicals present are commonly used in many, many cosmetic products. In fact, I'm willing to bet that if you go to your medicine cabinet, you'll find at least one thing that contains chlorphenesin and/or pheoxyethanol. Does that mean it's safe for babies? Well, not necessarily but remember too that there is such a thing as lanolin poisoning. (Lanolin is the key ingredient in Lansinoh breast cream--the only nipple cream endorsed by La Leche League.) All of this to say: don't panic if you have the cream, and have used it. As long as your baby isn't showing symptoms there's no need to worry. Simply put, the research is inconclusive. Personally, I'm a big fan of Soothies.
