Insurance Issues for Twins Born In Different Years

A pair of twins was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. One twin was born before 2011 had officially ended, and the other twin was born after 2012 had begun. How does having different birth years affect the health insurance of the twin’s parents? Beckett and Freya Humenny, who are fraternal twins, were born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Beckett was born at 6:40 p.m. on December 31, 2011. I think that everyone is aware that women can only give birth to one baby at a time. Twins usually share the same birthdate, (but different birth times). Freya was born a few hours after … Continue reading

Family Time Strengthens Family Bonds

This weekend, I am making some family memories with my husband, my son, and my in-laws. A few years ago, my husband and I started joining my in-laws on their annual trip to the Common Ground Fair up in Maine. This will be our second time going with our son, and we are excited to take many pictures and record videos and notes of our experiences. Family vacations are one of my favorite ways to connect with both my parents and my in-laws and I am very lucky that we have been able to make a couple of trips pretty … Continue reading

Random Tips on Teaching Art and Art History

It seems that we homeschoolers know the importance of a well rounded education. In fact, I have often said I feel like if I didn’t homeschool, my kids would miss out on all the wonderful opportunities sitting under our noses here in New York City. However, art, P.E. and sometimes music education are lacking in many homeschools. Either we don’t know how to do it or what to do. I know for me, art is not my thing. My stick figures are barely discernable. Yet somehow, I’ve managed to school fairly artistic children. A friend recently asked me how I … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Early Exposure to Allergens

Question: My oldest son has a very serious peanut allergy. I have two questions. I have heard that eating peanut butter while breastfeeding can cause a peanut allergy. If this is true, could I have caused my son‘s allergies while breastfeeding him? If so, should I avoid peanuts while breastfeeding this one that I’m expecting? Or should I avoid breastfeeding this new baby altogether? One very commonly accepted theory of how young kids get allergies is that they were over exposed to the allergen very early in life. However, we don’t really know exactly why some kids are more prone … Continue reading

You Might be Having Twins If. . .

I have talked with many mothers who at one point during their pregnancy, were at very least intrigued by the idea that they might be having twins. Maybe someone in their family has had them or maybe they just like the thought of having two for the price of one. However, I can assure you, a twin pregnancy is distinctive from a singleton one. Here are a few tell tale signs that you might be expecting two! 1. Extreme morning sickness. Every woman is different and some women wouldn’t experience morning sickness at all, some will experience moderate amounts and … Continue reading

The Questions Continue Part 1: We love Art, Music and P.E.

Kaye and I have been publicly discussing our views of home schooling vs. schooling out of the home (as homeschoolers would call it). Kaye’s last blog has asked so many questions that I have decided to answer them in three blogs instead of just one! The first question Kaye poses has to do with physical education. If I may, I’m going to expand upon her question, and answer what a home schooling family can do to satisfy requirements (if there are any) regarding art education, music education as well as physical education. I hope that if there are any of … Continue reading

Genetic Screening During Pregnancy

A person’s risk for some genetic disorders may be calculated based upon the occurrence of those disorders in other family members. Also, for both disorders that have been linked to genealogy and those that have not yet been linked to genealogy there are times when an individual can be screened for genetic disorders. One of the times when genetic screening is available is during the first trimester of pregnancy. The first trimester screen is a noninvasive test that consists of two parts. One portion of the test is a blood test and the other involves an ultrasound. The test identifies … Continue reading

Why Genealogy is a Great Hobby For Geeks

When you think about it, there are a lot of things about genealogy that make it the perfect hobby for geeks. Although genealogy once was considered a pass time for the elders to partake in, this is no longer the case. Perhaps all those television programs that have delved into genealogy are exactly what has increased the popularity of the hobby. In any case, genealogy is something that could very easily attract geeks. Now, before we go any further, let me make it clear that I am not picking on people who are geeks, or nerds, or whatever the proper … Continue reading

Is Addiction In Your Genes?

Addiction is a very serious condition that affects about ten percent of the population. It affects people of all ethnicities, and all socioeconomic backgrounds. The consequences of addiction are diverse; it affects both physical and mental health and economic, social, and emotional well being. Our understanding of the workings of addiction has grown tremendously in recent years, as more and more research on addiction has been done. Research has shown that genetic predisposition to addiction, along with poor coping skills, are the two factors that determine whether an individual will struggle with addiction. Studies that were conducted by observing twins, … Continue reading

Great Reasons to Start Working on Genealogy

Everyone has their own reasons for why they have selected genealogy as their hobby. For some people, it is an innate interest in history that drives them to learn more about their ancestors. Perhaps you have a genealogist in your family, whose research has inspired you to do some digging of your own. Or, maybe you are one of the people who simply finds genealogy interesting and cannot get enough of it. Not everyone automatically finds genealogy to be a satisfying pastime, however. In part, I think this is because most people only have a vague idea about what genealogy … Continue reading
