IIHS Finds Half of All Booster Seats Do Not Fit Properly

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently evaluated 83 booster seats. They found that around half of them do not fit children properly. It might be time to check and see how well your child’s booster seat fits, and what the IIHS thinks of it. Booster seats are a slightly more “grown up” version of “infant seats”, or “convertible car seats”. All are designed to safely restrain babies and young children with a five-point harness. It helps to ensure the physical safety of infants and small children in case the vehicle they are riding in is involved in a traffic … Continue reading

Car Seats

When I was pregnant, I was very intimidated by car seats. They seemed complicated to install and I was worried about the consequences of doing it wrong. What if I got into a car accident and the seat wasn’t secure? Fortunately, the hospital where I gave birth had a free car seat check. It was a quick appointment. The women showed me how to properly install my car seat, gave me some tips for getting it snug, and then actually installed it for me. I received some free car seat safety information as well as an identification sticker to place … Continue reading

The New Car Seat

It was inevitable. Sooner or later our son was going to gain enough weight to outgrow his baby car seat. That time seems to have come sooner rather than later. My wife did all of the web-based research on car seats and finally found the one that seemed best for us (in, of course, a desirable color and pattern). It was delivered to our door. We signed the slip, my son clapped his little hands, we ripped off the tape and began the laborious process of figuring out our new travel friend. I’ve got to be honest: I’ve never seen … Continue reading

Attack of the Scratching Baby

Yesterday when my wife picked me up I customarily dropped all of my many bags full of books into the back of the vehicle and checked to see if my son was awake or not. On many days my son will be sleeping in his car seat (that he’s quickly outgrowing). I’ll just take a breath and enjoy seeing him. I hold myself back from leaning in and giving him a kiss for fear of waking him during the journey home. He’s much happier sleeping. Some days he’s awake and I can earn a smile for a funny sound or … Continue reading

Preparing a Young Child for the Hospital

Whether it is tubes in the ear for frequent ear infections or something more serious, having a young child stay in the hospital, especially when it involves surgery, can be a nerve-filled experience for both you and your child. Parents Magazine recently published an article all about preparing children when they have to go to the hospital. There is some good advice here, especially as it relates to babies and the youngest children. I’ve adapted some of the advice given as a result of my own experiences with children and hospitals. Inform yourself I always became less anxious whenever I … Continue reading

Sun Protection and Your Baby

Protecting your baby’s skin is so important for his lifelong health. One bad burn in childhood can dramatically increase her chance of getting skin cancer as an adult. Baby’s skin is thin and can often burn even on a cloudy day in the shade. Here are some tips that you can use to protect your baby from the damaging rays of the sun. What type of sun protection should you choose? Sunscreen acts as a screen absorbing the suns rays, while sunblock does a better job at actually blocking out everything. There is generally no difference between the active ingredients … Continue reading
