Elements of a Modern Nursery

Frills, ruffles and a matching Winnie the Pooh layette is out for baby's nursery. Instead, the hippest parents are taking their cues from celebrities, whose nurseries are modern and chic. while you may not be looking to spend $1500 for a crib, there are plenty of practical options will make your baby a sophisticated star. Here is what is hot right now for the modern nursery.

Crib bedding

Forget the cutsey and go for a bold statement with modern graphics that are easy for baby to focus on. Dots are really hot right now for the crib bedding, as are lines and stripes.

You can save money by skipping the crib blanket and crib pillow (they aren't safe for a young baby anyway and are used mostly as placeholders until your baby arrives) and focus on the sheets instead.

Floor

To warm up the nursery floor, forget the fuzzy rugs in pink and baby blue. Instead, opt for floor tiles that can be put together as a rug. You can mix and match colors for a custom pattern. More benefits: the tiles won't slip out from under you during that three am feeding, and if your darling generously spits up on the rug, you can remove the ruined tile and replace it instead of the entire carpet.

Walls

Graphic murals and crisp photo frames have replaced the elaborate pastoral scenes and puffy animals adorning the wall of the nursery. Paint your own mural yourself using a projector (see the home blog for ideas). Another hot idea for walls is large graphic letters and symbols, mixed and matched. Spell out your baby's initials or a special saying.

For a really modern take, have a picture of your child's DNA blown up and printed on a poster. It isn't cheap (about $400 from dna1.com), but it is definitely a bold statement and conversation starter. You can choose different colors, and the end result looks like modern art.
