Too Many Gifts

I love Christmas, I really do, but I can’t help but wonder how much longer it will be the holiday we all remember from childhood. Every year the stores bring out the decorations earlier and earlier. Christmas trees are up in the stores before the school supplies are even gone. Everything is advertised as that perfect gift for someone on your list. Have we forgotten what Christmas is about? All day long I hear people talking and read online about the shopping, shopping and more shopping. The amount of debt Americans take on every Christmas is staggering. I’m as guilty … Continue reading

Nursing Necklaces: A Solution for the Distracted Nurser

When my daughter was a newborn, breastfeeding was pretty relaxing. Once she latched on, she’d eat for about 20 minutes straight without ever coming up for air. I could count on relaxing during these times, and often caught a few ZZZ’s while she filled up her little belly. The older my daughter got, the less relaxing nursing sessions became. I still cherish our special breastfeeding moments together, but I’m definitely not getting any power naps in while she dines. Where she used to be blissfully unaware of the world around her, my baby girl is now as nosy as they … Continue reading

Does Your Baby Give Gifts On Holidays?

Since my daughter was born, I’ve had the joy of experiencing a number of holidays for the first time as a mother. There’s something about sharing big days with a child that make it so much more meaningful and exciting. Holidays we’ve shared so far include Halloween, where we laughed at how cute our baby looked in her costume; Christmas, where we bought our honey a myriad of presents, even though she wasn’t old enough to open them; and Easter, where we all cheered when we got a picture of our daughter smiling with her Easter basket. For those holidays, … Continue reading

What Parents Put Up With

And the Miley song was on And the Miley song was on And the Miley song was on… and on… and on… and on… And I thought the freakin’ fish song was bad. I stand corrected. Listening to Miley Cyrus’ hit song “Party In The U.S.A.” for the 10 billionth time is like getting hit in the head with a sledgehammer by manic railroad worker with good aim. The problem is my 5-year-old LOVES it. Which opens up an entirely different can of worms. For starters I’ve gone to great lengths to shield my baby from pop culture influences, including… … Continue reading

The 60-40 Rule

Many experts in the field of marriage advice will tell you that a successful marriage is 50/50. I beg to disagree. In fact, I think the 60/40 rule is really the secret. What is the 60/40 rule? That is where one person gives 60 percent and expects only 40 percent back. Now before you start telling me that this is completely unfair and why should one partner in the marriage only get 40 percent, let me explain. For the 60/40 rule to work, BOTH partners have to follow the same rule of giving 60 percent and accepting or taking or … Continue reading

Baby Gifts for Tough Times

In these tough economic times, it might be hard to decided what to get that baby in your life for the holidays. Did you know the average toy for a baby runs between $40 and $60? Must have strollers and other equipment can run into the hundreds. But babies need love and good care above all else. They would rather spend time engaged with loving people than playing with a top-rated toy by themselves. Young babies in particular, need very little in terms of toys no matter what the toy experts may lead you to believe. Study after study has … Continue reading

Holiday Stress & Your Baby

Are you and your family traveling to grandma’s this weekend? Keep in mind that the holidays provide an entirely different kind of stress for your baby whether he or she is an infant or a toddler. Holidays are times when families see each other — sometimes for the first time since the previous holiday. Aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, grandparents and more will be surrounding your little one with a great deal of love and more often than not – a lot of touching. Let’s Not Think About the Colds & Stuff Viruses – though often transmitted during the holiday shuffle … Continue reading

Exploration: Playing with Baby

It’s important to remember that games and playtime for babies under the age of 2 are very much about exploration and experimentation. Babies play through their movement and through their senses. They learn about the world around them. They learn about their parents. They learn about themselves. What’s great about this kind of play is that it rarely requires a purchase and even more rarely does it fail you for entertaining the little one. When you are taking your baby or toddler out to the various 4th of July celebration whether it’s a parade, fireworks or a family picnic – … Continue reading
