When Valentine’s Day Is a Downer

Valentine’s Day can be a real downer for many teens.  It may be nothing more than a reminder that they don’t have a boyfriend or girlfriend, fueling some of the negative beliefs they may already have about themselves. Sometimes schools add insult to injury by drawing greater attention to it.  Although last week was “Spirit Week” at my daughter’s high school, I found the theme for Friday to be a bit unsettling. You were supposed to wear a color to represent your relationship status.  The different colors showed if you were taken, single or in a relationship dubbed “it’s complicated.”  … Continue reading

The Sleeping Boy

It was time to prepare. There was church to attend, floors to clean, dishes to wash, frosting to make, napkins to fold, and all manner of mess to clear from the floors before guests arrived. There was no time for squandering time. Things had to be done. And so it was that our son was enlisted into the army of cleaners. There was no ceremony or badges (no time for any of that of course), but there was drill sergeant-like orders barked from all sides. “Move, Private!” “Does that look clean to you?” “What do you mean you can’t see … Continue reading

“Boy Meets World” Sequel to Air on Disney Channel

Heads up, children of the 90s: according to Entertainment Weekly, the Disney Channel is planning a “Boy Meets World” sequel. The teen sitcom, which aired in the 1990s as part of ABC’S “TGIF” Friday night lineup, starred Ben Savage as Cory Matthews, a kid growing up in suburban Philadelphia. I was a kid growing up in suburban Philadelphia, just a bit younger than Cory. Of all the childhood shows that had a strong influence on my development, “Boy Meets World” wasn’t one of them. But it’s a show that I enjoyed and watched faithfully from beginning to end, so the … Continue reading

Do Men Want a Clone of Mother?

Recently a study came out that revealed men are more likely to marry women who look like their mother. In contrast, women were less likely to marry men who look like their fathers. It was suggested that this may be true about men because they are visually oriented. And for women, they are more about fatherly qualities. Now some believe these findings are creepy. I personally don’t put much weight into this study. Maybe it’s because I am looking at it from my own perspective. My father is Caucasian, of German descent. My husband is half Mexican and half Polish. … Continue reading

Gender Disappointment – It Does Happen Sometimes

Whether you are expecting your first child or a subsequent addition to the family, you are likely to have some feelings about what the new baby’s gender is. Also, no matter how hard you try to avoid thinking about the subject, you are likely to have some amount of desire for your baby to be a particular gender. With my first pregnancy, I wanted to have a little boy. When the ultrasound showed that I was indeed carrying a boy, I was elated. During my second pregnancy, I felt like I was carrying a girl and like I wanted to … Continue reading

Are You Ready For Small Saturday

Boys Will Be Boys

I am so amazed at the difference between my boys and my girl. As a baby, my daughter used to sit and play quietly with a cup and spoon “feeding” her baby doll, while my boys are all rough and tumble play. Even as an 11 month old. My baby has picked up all the truck noises from his big brother. His favorite thing in the world is pushing the fun big trucks around that his older brother has. I keep them hidden under my 3 year old’s bed, but the baby has figured out where they are, and makes … Continue reading

Have A Happy Halloween With Your Toddler

Halloween is just around the corner, and for the parents of toddlers it can be both a very fun and a very challenging holiday to navigate. Getting your little guy or girl into a costume is not likely to be much of a battle because most toddlers love to play “dress up”. If you want, you can even get into the act with a compatible costume for yourself. Your toddler is sure to love seeing Mommy, Daddy, or both “playing dress up” too. This year, Dylan has decided that he would like to be a fireman. He already has his … Continue reading

Have Some Fun With Your Gender Reveal

Many couples eagerly await the day when they find out whether they are expecting a little girl or a little boy. With each of my pregnancies, I chose to find out my baby’s gender. Both times, I was overjoyed to learn that I was having a little boy. Unfortunately, I simply disclosed what I learned to my husband, friends, and family by talking to them. It did not occur to me that I could have done something clever to reveal the exciting news to my friends and family. If you are excited to find out the gender of your baby, … Continue reading
