Now Is A Good Time To Learn About Breastfeeding

Whether you are thinking of breastfeeding your baby or you are trying to decide whether you will breastfeed your baby, it is important to educate yourself about breastfeeding. Of course, the best time to read up on breastfeeding is while you are pregnant, so that you can be ready to nurse your baby when she arrives. It is also good to become familiar with breastfeeding resources that offer information and support. That way, you’ll know right where to turn when challenges or questions come up along the way. One great resource that I have used to answer many of my … Continue reading

FDA Warns Against Using Nipple Cream

The FDA has issued a warning against Mommy’s Bliss Nipple Cream on Friday, May 23. The FDA discourages mothers from using the cream saying that two ingredients within the cream could cause diarrhea, respiratory problems and vomiting in infants. The FDA Warning The ingredients named as problematic in the cream are chlorphenesin, phenoxyethanol. According to the FDA, the interaction between these ingredients is also troublesome and can exacerbate symptoms. The FDA is saying that moms should stop using this cream and consult a doctor immediately if your infant shows any symptoms. Baby’s Bliss Upon receiving the FDA results, Baby’s Bliss … Continue reading

If These Boobs Could Talk – Adrienne Hedger and Shannon Payette Seipat

I saw If These Boobs Could Talk: A Little Humor to Pump Up the Breastfeeding Mom by Adrienne Hedger and Shannon Payette Seipat the bookstore. I laughed out loud at the front cover illustration and cartoon caption “Oh great, a tooth”. Breastfeeding can be a beautiful thing, and I’m very glad I nursed my own children. But breastfeeding also has lots of unexpected and embarrassing moments like leaky breasts, unexpected letdowns, tricky nursing bras, soggy shirts, and unplanned exposures. This book treats all those moments with a light-hearted irreverence that will earn laughs of recognition from nursing mothers everywhere. Nursing … Continue reading

Valorie’s Breastfeeding Index

Later today I will post a review of the baby blog of 2007 so why does breastfeeding get its own category? Well, in part as an answer to readers who want to read what I’ve written on breastfeeding. I’ve written so much on breastfeeding at this point that you all have asked for an index of sorts so it’s easier to find what you’re looking for. It’s also in part because I’ve become known as the breastfeeding lady. . .guru. . .whatever you want to call it. I’ve been at this breastfeeding business for a long time and many of … Continue reading

The Savvy Mom’s Thoughts on “the Hottest” New Baby Products

My disclaimer is that I’m not really that savvy. The word “experienced” fits better but it makes the title way too long. In any case, have you ever wondered whether or not you’re really going to need that nifty new thing in the stores that seems to be the “it“ baby product of the century? I remember registering with my first and remembering that I wished I had brought a friend with me to tell me what I really needed. Well, you don’t have to because I’m introducing a new feature to the baby blog. Amazon.com updates their “Movers and … Continue reading

Un-confusing the Nipple Confused Baby

Just in case I didn’t make the point perfectly clear in my last blog, the easiest thing to do is to avoid nipple confusion entirely by not giving the baby anything besides your breast until breastfeeding is well established–this includes pacifiers and/or bottles of expressed milk! However, if your baby is hospitalized that just might not be possible. For us, we already had other children at home and I simply couldn’t be at the hospital for every feeding. There was no other alternative but to feed Meghan bottles while I was not there. While most babies transition easily between breast … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Should I Use a Nipple Shield?

Question: My nipples are sore and cracked. If I use a nipple shield, will it help them heal faster? Also, how do I use a nipple shield. Generally speaking, the answer is a resounding NO! You should never use a nipple shield outside of the care of a qualified IBCLC (lactation consultant). Most lactation consultants will not encourage you to use a nipple shield either but rather will work with you to fix the latch (which is the problem if your nipples are cracked and bleeding). Nipple shields are useful in a few instances but we’ll get to that in … Continue reading

Let’s Talk About Researching Baby Gear

With all the products on the market that are aimed at babies and new parents, choosing the right ones can be overwhelming at best. Being a parent means choosing the best product that you can afford. It can be difficult to decide from all the available products, so I’ve put together a comprehensive checklist to help guide you through your decisions. First, make a list of the things you think you will need to purchase or add to your shower registry. You can actually find a list online if you do a search, or ask for one at the store … Continue reading

Choosing a Breastpump

How do you choose a breast pump, especially if you’re a first time mom? To be honest, I went to the store and picked out the cheapest one, grabbed some bottles and some extra nipples and we were done. I’ve learned a few things since then and I can tell you that the cheapest one will work just fine if you pump occasionally to be gone occasionally (once a week or less). However, I’ve since learned a few things and there are some very specific considerations you should think about when choosing a breast pump. Do You Even Need a … Continue reading

What to Eat While You’re Breastfeeding

It actually takes more calories to feed another little human than to grow one in utero. Breastfeeding uses up around 500 calories a day (so yes, if you’re feeding two, that equals 1,000 calories a day!) So if you’re er. . .uh. . .mathematically inclined like me, nursing one infant a day equals a big scoop of Cold Stone Creamery Ice Cream, or a slice of pizza and a soda! It is true, you can eat pretty much whatever you’d like while you’re breastfeeding. Interestingly, what you eat has very little effect on the composition of breast milk–it still has … Continue reading
