Help for Families in the “Diaper Gap”

Families with newborns quickly learn that diapers are expensive. Many families struggle to be able to afford enough diapers for their babies. This leads to difficult choices like whether to spend money on food, diapers, or utility bills. The Obama administration has a plan that utilizes technology to help solve this problem. Nearly one in three Americans cannot afford to purchase enough diapers for their babies. In some cases, parents cope by stretching the length of time between diaper changes. This can lead to serious health problems for babies and parents. Babies can end up with urinary tract or staph … Continue reading

Diaper Rash Control: Homemade Spray

I’ve written before about my daughter’s diaper rashes. Her skin is sensitive, and she breaks out very easily, depending on the type of diapers and wipes we use. This rash isn’t simply a little redness or some bumps. It’s a full-blown, red, inflamed, scabby, awful rash. We had a system that was working well for us. We had her diaper rash under control. That all changed when she started teething. I’m not sure why teething affects diaper rashes, but I know that it caused hers to return. I again found myself trying and testing new methods to see what would … Continue reading

But unless the diaper has been on for so long that it is leaking, the weight and the smell of the diaper is a better indication of whether or not it is wet. Diaper manufacturers refer to pee or poop as “the insult.” In other words, they do studies about how much “insult” a diaper can … Continue reading

Blowouts

Every parent dreads this moment. You smell something unusually stinky. You pick up your baby and you feel something damp on their leg or their back. You remove their pants and realize the poop is all over their clothes and up their back. You are afraid of opening the diaper but it is the inevitable next step. It is the infamous blowout and it happens to every baby. Sometimes the best thing to do is simply put the baby in the tub, because some messes just can’t be cleaned with wipes. Beetles Everywhere!

Always shake out your clothes after hanging them on the line. If you don’t, a Japanese beetle might find his way into your toddler’s onesie. He might die in the hamper, still in the onesie. You might put the onesie on your toddler, not knowing about the beetle hiding inside. The beetle might fall down into your toddler’s diaper. You might find the beetle in your toddler’s diaper after a nap. You might feel a sinking sense of dread as you wonder if the beetle hurt your little one. You might search his skin for bites and breathe a sigh … Continue reading

5 Reasons 5 Months is a Great Age

“I love this age,” is a phrase I keep hearing lately when I take my son out. He is five months old, and I have to agree, this is a great age. Here are five reasons I love this age: 1. Life is one big game of peek-a-boo. Everywhere we go, whatever we do, the simple act of looking at my son out of the blue is enough to make him squeal with delight. When I’m filling up the car with gas, we play peek-a-boo through the window. When we’re at the grocery store, turning away to pick an item … Continue reading
