Decorating Baby's Room - NOT What it Used to Be

I was watching A Baby Story on TLC today and heard something that made me think. The man on the show, who was about to become a father for the first time, made a joke regarding decorating their baby's room. His wife was talking to him about a "theme" and he laughed and said that there were no "themes" when he was a kid. You had a room with four walls and that was good enough.
Today, when parents prepare for the arrival of their precious bundle, most of us go along with the trend of decorating the room with a theme. Whether it's Disney or animals or trucks or dolls, I think it's a safe bet to say that most parents today try to stay with a common theme when deciding on items for their baby's bedroom. I was lured into this as well with my own two children. At first, I very much wanted everything to match, to be in the same color scheme, to flow. And it was cute to be certain. But gradually things started filtering in the room that didn't match, that didn't fit into my imagined dream room. And you know what? It was okay. My kids still slept peacefully, played happily, and loved their room.
When I grew up, my room didn't have a theme. The furniture changed from time to time and eventually, though the years, the room became an eclectic mix of all of my interests. Many of you probably have the same story. Why is it then that there is so much pressure today to make everything perfect?
I like a cute room as much as anyone, but today's "themed" rooms can be expensive! For those who can't afford the expensively matched themed items, but who want to incorporate the same ideas into their child's room, try sticking with basic elements with similar colors and you'll wind up with a lovely room. And if you're not as concerned with the current trends, then bravo to you. Your child will still have a wonderful room that he or she will cherish simply because it's theirs and because they are loved.
