Your Young Toddler and Temper Tantrums

Oh the joys of raising a young toddler who has recently discovered her desire for independence. She answers every question with a firm, “no.” She purposely gets into things she knows she should not get into (and occasionally you may even hear her telling herself “no” before she does it). She gets mad at her toys, at you, and at nothing. She expresses her anger by flailing herself to the floor, sometimes hurting herself in the process, and often causing a scene. She’ll try to bite, scratch, kick and hit, which is bewildering to the mother who wonders where she … Continue reading

Dealing with a Screaming Toddler

Sometimes it seems that there is nothing worse than a screaming toddler, unless it is a screaming toddler in public. Here are some tips on how to deal with this situation in a loving manner and regain control of the situation. The first piece of advice that I have is that if you are out in public when your toddler starts screaming, is to ignore everyone else around you. You will get many many looks, especially if you are in a crowded store or restaurant. Forget the stares, the sympathetic smiles and even the comments of outrage. Parents of young … Continue reading

The Baby Blog in Review: September 16 to September 29

It’s that time of the week again when I review what’s happening in the baby blog. If you have reading to catch up on, go grab a cup of coffee and have a seat! Sept 16 Why Use a Baby Hammock? A baby hammock is a great way to help ease your little one back to sleep because instead of producing a motorized motion, a hammock sways and bounces with the babies own movements. Therefore, when the baby stirs, the hammock responds and gently lulls baby back to sleep. Sept 17 How to Dress Your Baby for Cold Weather Stop … Continue reading

What NOT to do When Your Toddler Refuses to Move

Have you ever been in public and your sweet angelic child ends up throwing the temper tantrum to end all temper tantrums? She screams, she yells, and she refuses to get up? My twins have an advantage because I can really only pick up one at a time–and they know it. But I saw something curious yesterday–I’ve actually seen parents do this before–but for some reason it struck me as especially illogical yesterday. Amazingly, my twins were well behaved yesterday on our outing. But some other mother was having one hard time with her baby who I am guessing to … Continue reading

The Strong Willed Toddler: My Experiences

I am the first to say that I try really, really hard not to judge people as parents based on my one-time observation of them and their child in public. I used to feel strongly that children whined and behaved and carried on in public because they were allowed to do so. Their parents got sick of the whining and gave in. I still think this is true and that it happens all the time. But gone are the days where I may look at a mother and think that her toddler is throwing a tantrum because he’s learned she’ll … Continue reading

Build Grouchy Time Into Your Toddler’s Day

If you have a toddler you are probably all too familiar with the temper tantrum. You may also have a child who insists on throwing a tantrum at the most inopportune time, say for instance in the morning while you are trying to get the kid off to daycare or preschool and yourself off to work. What can you do to make sure you’re not rushing everyday? Parenting expert and columnist John Redmond offered this advice to a mother who was at her wits end about how to handle the daily early morning tantrums her daughter was throwing. The mother … Continue reading

Losing It in Public

Overheard at the zoo last week: Mom to tweenage son: “Knock it off, Caden! We’re not in a video game.” Tweenage boy attempting to trip younger sibling: “You’re going down.” Mom: “Caden! Knock! It! Off!” Boy: “DOWN!” And that’s exactly where the younger sibling went. Flat on his face, courtesy of the tweenage boy, right in front of the polar bear exhibit where my daughter and I happened to be standing. Unfortunately, we had front row seats to the mama drama. And the show was far from over. In fact, it was just beginning. Once the mom saw her younger … Continue reading

Old Man Winter vs. Tired Mama

We’re only a month into winter and I’m already counting the days until summer. Actually, I will settle for any season free of snow, ice, and sub-zero wind chills. In most parts of the world that would be spring, but I reside in Wisconsin, where it can (and often does) snow in June. Did I mention the state’s unofficial motto is: “Welcome to the land of two seasons: winter and construction.” It would be funny if it were not the cold, hard truth. I complained a lot about living in the Frozen Tundra when I was single. Partly, because I … Continue reading

Taming Tantrums Part 2

You read yesterday about some tips to alleviate some of the common causes of temper tantrums. Today we’ll talk about some more tricks to make everybody’s lives a little easier. Nobody likes to go to the doctor. Your kids are no different. They may feel some anxiety about having to get shots every time they show up at the doctor’s office. Try to be empathetic. Shots are no fun and can be frightening for kids. Let them know that it’s ok to be scared, but that it’s important to get shots so that they don’t get sick. Try giving them … Continue reading

Getting Kids to Listen

Recently overheard “conversation” between a mother juggling her 6-month-old baby and 2-year-old toddler, while her 4-year-old happily frolicked around the parking lot of my daughter’s school: “Lily, get into the van. LILY! Get into the van now. LIIILLLY!!! Stop running around and get into the van NOW! LILY FRANCIS, YOU GET INTO THIS VAN NOW!!! LILY! VAN! NOW! ONE… TWO… LILY… onetwothree… I mean it… GET. OVER. HERE. NOOOOOOOW!!!” Enter another mom, who scoops up the errant child and deposits her into the van that holds a now screaming 6-month-old, an ornery 2-year-old, and a hoarse mother. While you might … Continue reading
