Cthulhu AllSpark is not a Good Baby Name

How did you decide upon the perfect name for you son or daughter? Many parents choose names that have been handed down in their families from one generation to the next. Others pick names that are popular in the year the baby was born. One couple decided to break with tradition and ask “the internet” to select a name for their baby girl. Poor thing almost got named Cthulhu All-Spark! How did this very unique name get suggested? It didn’t come from either of her parents! Stephen McLaughlin, a software developer, decided to ask the Reddit community to suggest some … Continue reading

Most Popular Pet Names of 2012

One thing we see a lot of this time of year is lists of baby names: the top baby names for the year, and names that are projected to be popular in the coming year.  What we don’t expect to see are studies of a different sort of name: dog names.  But that’s just what MSN did, compiling a list of the top puppy names for 2012. A familiar name tops the list: Bella.  It’s been a popular female dog name since 2006, thanks to the “Twilight” craze.  I can attest to that; Chihiro was originally named Bella when we … Continue reading

Uma Thurman’s Daughter Has Seven Names

Parents give a lot of thought to the name that they will give their children. Typically, a child will be given a first name, a middle name, and a surname (which may or may not contain a hyphen). Celebrities tend to give their children unusual names. Uma Thurman gave her daughter seven names. In many families, there are certain names that are handed down from one generation to another. In my family, we have a lot of people, on both sides of the family tree, who are named James. It is common for new parents to name their baby after … Continue reading

But, as it turns out on this Academy Awards weekend, the celebrities are making out like bandits. I guess it is only far because only a select few will take Oscar home this weekend. All the others get to take home the swag. What’s up for grabs this year? For the stars that stay at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, quite a few goodies. Lisa Gal … Continue reading

Naming Your Baby: Is Popularity a Bad Thing?

Did you know Jacob has been the number one boy’s name in the US since 1999? Ironically this is one of the names my husband and I have chosen as a possibility if we have another boy. Now I’m not so sure. Considering how popular the name is, he may have a hard time in school when the teachers do roll call. Emily was the number one girls name every year from 1996 to 2007. Guess which girls name ranked number one from 1909 to 1946? The answer is at the end of this blog. On the other end of … Continue reading

Parents and Baby Names

Jeffrey Dahmer murdered, mutilated and cannibalized 17 young men and boys between 1978 and 1991, and somehow his parents were to blame. At least according to some psychologists, who claimed that Dahmer’s “disturbing behavior” was a result of a strained relationship with his parents. Frankly, I don’t buy into the whole blame-all-your-faults-on-your-parents philosophy, and I certainly don’t think Dahmer’s parents were to blame for their son’s psychotic behavior, but there is one fact of life that is the sole responsibility of mothers and fathers: baby names. When it comes to naming children, parents are the ultimate decision makers. While some … Continue reading
