Hopefully, you began to breastfeed right after you gave birth (like all the books say you should), and your baby popped right on (like many of the books seem to imply they will), and thus the beautiful nursing relationship began and you and your baby lived happily ever after.

Out of all the nursing nuisances I have dealt with, thrush has been the most trouble. Thrush, or candida, is basically an overgrowth of yeast in the mouth. We all have a certain amount of yeast in our mouths, intestinal walls, and genital areas. It becomes problematic when it overgrows.

Occasionally, the milk ducts in the breast (small "tubes" that carry milk from the milk making cells to the areola) get plugged. The result is a tender, and sometimes red lump in the areola. A plugged duct is caused by the breast not being "emptied" effectively.

Sometimes, women can have too much breast milk. Their bodies produce more than their baby demands and the result is an oversupply that can cause symptoms in both the mother and the baby.

My first two children could've been La Leche League poster babies. They latched perfectly, they nursed perfectly. They loved nursing and I loved nursing them. They did exactly what the textbook said they would and except for one bout of thrush with the baby, I had no problems.
