Car Seats

When I was pregnant, I was very intimidated by car seats. They seemed complicated to install and I was worried about the consequences of doing it wrong. What if I got into a car accident and the seat wasn’t secure? Fortunately, the hospital where I gave birth had a free car seat check. It was a quick appointment. The women showed me how to properly install my car seat, gave me some tips for getting it snug, and then actually installed it for me. I received some free car seat safety information as well as an identification sticker to place … Continue reading

How Long Do You Have to Worry About SIDS?

Here is yet another blog inspired by recent discussion in the forums. Several discussions have popped up lately regarding babies sleeping on their backs and other bedtime behavior that we’ve all been told not to allow. Back to Sleep The Back to Sleep campaign is an educational campaign that seeks to educate new parents on the dangers of putting your baby to sleep on their tummies. Since the campaign started, statistics show almost a 50% decrease in the incidences of SIDS. While I don’t think it can be exclusively attributed to the back to sleep campaign*, there certainly is a … Continue reading

Most Common Car Seat Mistakes Parents Make

I take my older kids to classes three times per week. That’s three times per week into Manhattan of driving nap bliss. But I digress. This past week I was driving, slowly (because one simply cannot drive fast in Manhattan) when all of the sudden without any warning one of my twins bounded up the aisle in the van and sat in the seat next to me. I was completely astonished. You’d think I’d know how to put a child in a car seat by now right? After all, according to New York State law, I still have four children … Continue reading

A Cautionary Bath Time Tale

If you parent one child, I’m sure you’ll leave this blog thinking this woman is a terrible mother. But for those of us who have more children, while we may not have made the same mistake, that feeling of being overwhelmed and disjointed is not so far distant. Honestly, I can’t really judge this mom. A young mother in Brooklyn was caring for her 11 month old daughter and another two year old and they were getting their daily bath. And then she smelled the rice burning down the hall. As you may guess if you haven’t read the story, … Continue reading

SIDS Linked to Hearing Abnormality

This is probably the most ground breaking research ever published studying SIDS. Results are preliminary and as one researcher points out there have been other ’causes’ linked to SIDS but none of them are conclusive. However, researchers in Seattle published a study in this month’s edition of the Journal of Early Human Development. The study group was small but significant and it will help propel SIDS research forward. Out of a small group of infants who died of SIDS, every single one had an abnormality with the right ear. Interestingly, the left ear in every infant was normal. So far, … Continue reading

Baby Blog Week in Review: July 16 to July 22

Hello everyone! Last week was a light week, but we still had great information for all of our baby blog readers! If you need to catch up on your reading, here is the week in review at a glance! July 16 Gerber Cereal Causes Choking? Gerber has recalled some of their organic cereal because it could pose a choking hazard. However, in this blog, I wonder whether or not the babies who were eating this cereal were really ‘ready’ to start eating solids in the first place. This is a great blog to review when you should start giving your … Continue reading

Car Seats Put Infants at Risk for SIDS?

I have to say right off the bat that my title for this is misleading. (But truth be told, I couldn’t think of an appropriately short title. . .) So here is my disclaimer: you should always put your infant in a car seat while driving. Car seats in and of themselves are not dangerous. But new research suggests you might want to avoid long errands out and make sure your seat is fitted properly to your vehicle when your infant is young. A study, done in a university in Canada reconstructed the unexpected deaths of approximately 500 infants over … Continue reading
