In Search of Cheap Seats

A few weeks ago, Southwest Airlines added yet another fee to its ever-expanding list of ala carte charges.  Now, you’ll have to fork over $40 at the gate if you want to board the plane with the first group of passengers. The discount carrier doesn’t offer assigned seats like United and American Airlines, but will bump you to the coveted group “A” boarding if you cough up the extra cash.  The offer begins 45 minutes before the flight departs, though is only available if the slots are not filled by elite and business select passengers who pay upfront for the … Continue reading

Saving Kids from Hot Cars

One of the things that I really dread about summer are all the reports of babies and toddlers who die or are critically injured when a parent or caregiver inadvertently leaves them behind in a hot car. Often, it is hours before a child is discovered, and with internal temperatures reach 120 degrees, these babies are found too late to be saved. Why does it happen? Overwhelmed or distracted drivers simply forget. Sometimes a change in routine is enough to do it. The parent that doesn’t usually drop the child off at daycare has to do it one time and … Continue reading

Keeping Your Car Safe and Clean

I just bought a new car and I’m a little obsessed with how to keep it clean. When I got rid of my old car I found that I have a hoarding problem, as clean as I thought my car was, there was a lot of stuff in there. I’m working on making some organizers to corral all that stuff but I’ve also come up with some rules to help keep it clean. No eating allowed in the car. I know it’s convenient to grab something and eat it on the way, especially when you are running late. The problem … Continue reading

Keeping The Car Clean

If you were to look inside my car you would think that this past winter lasted about five years. It looks like it’s been that long since I cleaned it. It hasn’t really but everything is so dirty. It’s time to take it to the car wash and then detail the inside. I’m always amazed at how dirty the console gets. I think every drop of water or coffee that pops out of my drink rolls around in the dirt before landing the car, then it invites more dirt to come visit. Needless to say the console needs a good … Continue reading

That New Car Smell

It’s been so warm here lately and every day I see people at the car wash, I really should wash my car as well, maybe tomorrow. My car is a mess, I’m not very good about making sure it gets washed in the winter. Having a clean car is probably even more important in the winter, all the wet weather and road dirt gets on your windows and once the sun hits them you can’t see a thing. I took my car through the car wash, even though it’s been warm, it’s not warm enough to go to a self … Continue reading

IIHS Finds Half of All Booster Seats Do Not Fit Properly

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently evaluated 83 booster seats. They found that around half of them do not fit children properly. It might be time to check and see how well your child’s booster seat fits, and what the IIHS thinks of it. Booster seats are a slightly more “grown up” version of “infant seats”, or “convertible car seats”. All are designed to safely restrain babies and young children with a five-point harness. It helps to ensure the physical safety of infants and small children in case the vehicle they are riding in is involved in a traffic … Continue reading

The Dirty Car

Today I’d like to get a little outside the home. I’d like to talk about my turtle shell, my roving home, my car. My car lives in the garage when it’s not taking me where I need to go. My car is a part of my home by extension. We leased the Light Sage Metallic Ford Escape in March, 2008. I really wanted the car in Kiwi Green Metallic, but the color was obnoxious on the lot. The color looked the way I anticipated it on the hybrid model, but we weren’t buying that. This has been a nice little … Continue reading

Buying a Used Green Car

Let’s say you want to be green, but when it comes to cars that can be costly. There’s the Chevrolet Volt. It’s a lovely four seat hatchback…that will run you about $40,000. Then, there is the Nissan Leaf. It has five seats and comes with a little bit smaller price tag – around $32,000. What if your price range is a bit lower? Well, you might consider a nice used green car. Of course, what you get depends on how much you want to spend and how old is too old for a used car. AOL listed some great used … Continue reading

Mom Creates Shopping Cart for Special Needs Children

Grocery shopping is one situation that can be difficult for parents of children with special needs. One of the more obvious problems involves the shopping cart. The seats in those carts are often not the best choice for children with certain types of special needs. A mom from Alabama found an excellent solution to the shopping cart problem. She designed one for families of special needs children to use! Drew Ann Long, and her husband David Long, are parents of three children. They have a daughter named Caroline, who has special needs. As Caroline grew, her mother Drew Ann quickly … Continue reading

Cars 2 in 3-D

Every year Child Protective Services in our county hosts a summer movie at Studio Movie Grill. The first time we went it was just me and Jessie. The movie was Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. We sat on the side with my friend Hannah, her son Peter, and her infant placement. I didn’t know what to expect and packed a Lunchable and drinks for Jessie. I was pleasantly surprised that there was pizza for everyone. There were also sodas and popcorn. I let Jessie have Sierra Mist and pizza, but not popcorn. She didn’t really pay much attention … Continue reading
