The mass killings at Sandy Hook Elementary were beyond senseless.  Nearly a month after the tragedy millions around the world are still stunned by the horror that robbed Newtown, Connecticut, of dozens of its most precious residents. Of those millions, many are parents, who cried with Sandy Hook victims’ families in the days following the horrific shootings.  Ironically, some of those same moms and dads, who clung tightly to their own children in the hours and days after the murders, are the same ones who place their kids in jeopardy when they get behind the wheel of their vehicle. According … Continue reading

The Empty Car Seat

Recently I experienced the pain of an empty car seat. Since I’ve been taking care of our son during the days we’ve been constant companions in and out of the car during the day. I’ve found myself constantly flipping the rear view mirror down or up to check on him when we’re stopped at a light or stop sign. He is my car buddy and it is comforting to know that he is there. Recently my wife went to a baby shower for one of her close friends and she wanted to take our rambunctious child along for the ride. … Continue reading

Car Seats

When I was pregnant, I was very intimidated by car seats. They seemed complicated to install and I was worried about the consequences of doing it wrong. What if I got into a car accident and the seat wasn’t secure? Fortunately, the hospital where I gave birth had a free car seat check. It was a quick appointment. The women showed me how to properly install my car seat, gave me some tips for getting it snug, and then actually installed it for me. I received some free car seat safety information as well as an identification sticker to place … Continue reading

Keep the Babies Out of the Car Seats?

Recent research by two orthopedic doctors at the Cincinnati’s Children’s Hospital Medical Center suggests we should keep babies out of car seats. Well, at least when we are not actually IN the car. The study, which was published Pediatrics, claims that about 9,000 car seat accidents occur each year, but the baby in the car seat is outside the car. Injuries to the babies included head and neck. Injuries occurred while the baby was still in the car seat, but not strapped in and the car seat was set somewhere like a table, countertop, or shopping cart and then fell … Continue reading

My Baby: A Bobble Head Doll

Due to some gorgeous days, full of sunshine and warm temperatures, my family and I spent quite a bit of time outside over the weekend. On the warmest day out of them all, my husband, his parents, our daughter and I decided to go hiking. We wanted to get some fresh air, and we had just bought a new baby backpack that we couldn’t wait to try out on a real trail. I like for my baby to get Vitamin D from some unprotected exposure to the sun, but an hour-long hike wasn’t the time to do it. We put … Continue reading

Safety of Slings

If you’re a parent who keeps up with baby product news, you no doubt have seen phrases similar to the following in recent headlines: “Sling recall.” “Slings blamed for infant deaths.” “Are any baby slings safe?” Due to the recent recall of two sling models manufactured by a well-known baby product company, many parents are questioning the safety of their baby carriers. Parents who formerly were convinced of the benefits of baby wearing are now wondering if the benefits are worth the risks. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, 13 infant deaths have been associated with sling-style carriers over … Continue reading

Car Seat Safety Following A Car Accident

My family was in a car accident this past week. We were inside our car, which was parked in a Walmart parking lot. I had just finished buckling our infant daughter into her car seat when a car struck us on the driver’s side front door. After getting everyone out of the car, calling 911, and calming our unsettled nerves, I began to consider the lasting impact of the car accident. Would all three of us be sore the next morning? Should I take my daughter to the doctor to be examined? The biggest question on my mind was the … Continue reading

Sunday Travel Funnies: Why Did the Turtle Cross the Road?

Any guesses? Well, we’ll likely never know because the little critter didn’t quite finish his journey. But that didn’t stop him from creating a catastrophe in the process. Authorities in New Jersey say the reptile caused one heck of an accident on the Garden State Parkway a few days ago. According to police, a woman reportedly swerved to avoid hitting the turtle as it crawled across the northbound lanes of the busy expressway. In the process she lost control of her car, crashed through a guardrail and tumbled down an embankment before the car flipped over onto its roof. Luckily, … Continue reading

Vehicle Airbags + Pregnant Women + Short Adults = DANGER

A few weeks ago I took my car into a service center to get a belt replaced. When an employee for the shop called to say my vehicle was ready to be picked up I automatically asked, “Is everything okay?” He replied dryly, “Your car’s fine, but the mechanic who worked on it was impaled by your steering wheel.” I had to laugh. I knew exactly what he was referring to—-my small stature, and the fact that I drive with my seat smack up to the steering wheel to reach the pedals. I chuckled then, but shortly after that exchange … Continue reading

“Mom, I need the car keys.” The ADHD Teenager & Driving

As a mom of teenagers, I soon face the dilemma of sharing the car keys. It’s a scary thing to think about. In just a few months, I’ll be able to watch my oldest child get into a vehicle and drive down the street. Yikes! I can already imagine the thoughts I’ll be grappling with… ”Will he remember to drive responsibly? Is he going to be distracted? Will he come back home, safe and sound?” As parents, we have very good reason to be concerned. The scary reality is that vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among youth … Continue reading
