Camping in the Yard

Like many small children, my daughter just loves camping. Like many tired parents, I am no fan of camping. It’s not that I don’t love nature. I do love nature. We hike a lot and we go to our cabin in the summer time. That’s all good. However, hiking involves minimal preparation time, and while our cabin involves a lot of packing, once we are there we can cook with ease and sleep in a bed. Our cabin does not involve epic amounts of packing over several days for a short trip, cooking that takes many times as long to … Continue reading

Looking Back at 2011

In just about 48 hours we will close the book on 2011. However, before you make like Wal-Mart and start working on Valentine’s Day preps, now is a good time to look back on the year that was. Creating year in review layouts is a tradition for me. I love selecting memorable moments from the last 365 days and putting them together in a classic page design. Since the passage of time is a vital part of any New Year’s celebration, consider using time-related embellishments in your layout. For example, I recently printed out an image of a large clock … Continue reading

How I Became a Food Activist (Part I)

I always thought that I ate pretty healthy for the most part. My mom has always been fairly health conscious and most of our summer time produce came from our garden. My mom never bought pre-made processed foods (with the exception of sandwich bread). We made almost all our baked goods from scratch. The only frozen foods we ate were peas and occasionally ice cream. The only time we ever had soda was on our summer camping trip. We ate pretty healthy growing up and extremely healthy in comparison to some of our childhood friends (who had things like frozen … Continue reading

Summer Fun for Your Allergic Child

Parents of children that have severe allergies might be a bit perplexed about what their child can do for fun this summer. You probably had a pretty good idea about what sort of allergens to expect that your child could encounter at school, and were prepared for them. What do you do now, when your child is out of school? The trick is to modify fun activities around your child’s allergies. Its nice to be able to play in the sprinkler on a hot, July, day. Parents of children who have no allergies can simply set up the sprinkler in … Continue reading

I’m Back!

As I haven’t blogged in over a month, I feel the need to explain my absence. In the course of about two months, my husband graduated from college, received a job in a different city, we moved, and we attended two family reunions (one that required a plane trip and sleeping in a tent). Those events would keep any person busy, but attempting to do all of them with an 11-month-old? That’s a different story. To begin, packing up an apartment while trying to keep my child entertained was no easy feat, especially because I strongly believe in attachment parenting. … Continue reading

Managing Your Energy Levels During Pregnancy

Halfway through our hike around Devil’s Lake in Wisconsin’s scenic state park of the same name, I was ready to pick a bench and crash. I had hiked this trail many times before, but this time I simply did not have the energy to finish. While the rest of my group finished the trek up the hill and over the boulders, I headed back to the campsite with my husband and passed out in the tent for two hours. Several times during our camping trip, I stumbled to the tent and fell asleep, napping for 2-3 hours at a time. … Continue reading

The Decluttering Rules: Sorting Big Items

I have Rubbermaids. They appear to have spawned in my basement, these big blue boxes. Luckily they also have labels, one for each season of the year. Christmas has several boxes, while Valentine’s Day and spring are all lumped into one. I also categorize my items in drawers, shelves, and rooms. Do you have a house that is full of stuff, without any particular order? If so, it’s likely very challenging to find what you’re looking for. Here are some ways that I categorize the items in my home. Large boxes are one of the ways that I categorize my … Continue reading

Easter and Marriage

Easter means different things to different people. As I’ve read a couple of other blogs I see some of those different traditions in families come out. To some people it means Easter bunnies and Easter egg hunts. To others it means church. Sometimes there is a combining of the two. In our marriage and those of our son and daughter and their spouses, it means church, remembering the first Easter and what Easter is all about – the death and resurrection of Jesus. One couple I know who are still on their L plates in their marriage has started a tradition … Continue reading
